Britney Spears getting a "Glee"-full makeover
LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears is the latest mega pop star to be getting a "Glee"-full makeover. "We are writing a Britney Spears episode," Ryan Murphy, creator of the hit musical comedy TV show, told celebrity news show Entertainment Tonight.
"Scared" Lindsay Lohan plans to appeal jail term
LOS ANGELES - Lindsay Lohan is "scared to death" about going to jail, and is planning to appeal her 90-day sentence with a new lawyer, her mother Dina Lohan said in an interview. "She's a fighter, and until the final result -- we're not giving up," Dina Lohan told celebrity news television show Entertainment Tonight in an interview to be broadcast on Friday.
Jennifer Lopez cancels Cyprus gig after outcry
NICOSIA - Pop star Jennifer Lopez has canceled a performance in Turkish-held north Cyprus after whipping up a storm of angry protest from thousands of displaced Greek Cypriots. Lopez's gig at a luxury hotel had triggered angry protests among Greeks accusing her of according legitimacy to northern Cyprus, a breakaway state recognized only by Ankara.
Police probe claims Gibson abused ex-girlfriend
LOS ANGELES - Law enforcement officials said on Thursday they are looking into claims that Oscar-winning director and actor Mel Gibson physically abused his former girlfriend and the mother of one of his children. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's office released a statement saying it was "gathering information regarding the allegations" and would disclose no other details because the probe was preliminary.
Emmy snubs! Master grouse list
LOS ANGELES - What?! How could they?! Are you serious?! What-what-what ... You mean they nominated THAT one, but not THAT one?? Yup. With plenty of fresh shows invading the major Emmy categories this year, it means competition was tougher than ever -- and some of the usual honorees were left in the cold. Overall, the Academy actually did a pretty good job of avoiding snubs that were flat-out jaw-droppers, but there's still plenty to complain about for fans.
Keeping up with self-made star Kim Kardashian
NEW YORK - A sex tape may have propelled Kim Kardashian to notoriety, but her deft use of social networking and reality TV since then have made the tabloid star the prototype of a new "aspirational celebrity," experts say. Once Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan ruled the scene. But these days Kardashian gets the wall-to-wall coverage. She has her own reality TV show, is consistently featured in celebrity magazine stories and just last week saw her much discussed curves refashioned into a Madame Tussauds wax figure.
Drake NY concert cancelled after security concerns
NEW YORK - A second free Drake concert in New York has been canceled after security concerns were raised by the city's police department. The Toronto rapper, whose debut album recently opened at No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart, was in talks to perform in Central Park on July 16 as part of ABC's "Good Morning America" summer concert series. According to the Daily News, the plans were scrapped after the NYPD told the city's Parks Department to bolster its security efforts.
"Inception" is no dream for marketers
LOS ANGELES - Movie fans may wish more original films were wedged into the usual summer mix of remakes and sequels, but marketing executives know enough to be careful what they wish for. Case in point: the Warner Bros. thriller "Inception," opening on July 16.
Whose Emmy strategies worked, and whose didn't?
LOS ANGELES - Given all the Emmy submission gamesmanship this season, it's worth checking in on which strategies were successful and which failed to deliver that golden nomination. The most high-profile Emmy strategists this year were the "Modern Family" cast. The ensemble submitted solely in the supporting actor and actress comedy categories. That worked great: They earned five nominations.
Winners and losers emerge at summer box office midpoint
LOS ANGELES - Much as the baseball world takes stock of who's hot and who's not with its midseason All-Star game, Hollywood has a good sense of summer winners and losers once Independence Day is torn from the movie release calendar. Warner Bros. and Fox have sipped from a glass half empty so far during the hottest box office season of the year, while Paramount has tied one on from a cup that runneth over. Paramount tops seasonal rankings by a comfortable margin, thanks to its distribution of a lucrative DreamWorks Animation tentpole as well as its own summer-launching of "Iron Man 2," a $309 million domestic grosser.
