ADVERTISEMENT The fresh violence came as US President Barack Obama warned his NATO allies that they face a greater risk of terror attacks than America and he needs their help to defeat Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. In one incident, a bomb ripped through a vehicle carrying workers for a private road construction company in the central province of Ghazni and killed four men, Ab Band district chief Allah Dad Halimee told AFP. He said police hunting for the perpetrators clashed with militants, with two Taliban fighters killed and one arrested. A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, sent a text message to an AFP reporter, claiming responsibility for the attack. In the east of the country, a soldier in the NATO-led force died Friday and another was wounded in a "hostile incident", the alliance's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement that gave no details. ISAF does not release the nationalities of its casualties, leaving this to their home nation. Nearly 80 international soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan this year, mostly in attacks, according to the icasualties.org website that tracks the casualties. ISAF said separately that its soldiers working with Afghan troops had killed 12 insurgents in a gun battle that erupted Friday at a compound in the province of Logar, which adjoins Kabul. Troops discovered "a large group of insurgents" placing homemade bombs on a road, it said. The men retreated into a compound while shooting at the soldiers, it said in a statement. "During the gunfire that resulted from the incident, 12 male insurgents were killed," it said. Troops discovered the body of a woman who was believed to have been killed in the gunfire, it said. In the western province of Herat, Taliban attacked a police post on the border with Iran late Thursday, killing a policeman and three civilian customs office clerks, a senior border police official named only Hamidullah said. The US military said meanwhile that its troops killed five militants in the southern province of Helmand late Thursday. Taliban fighters are leading a bloody insurgency against the Western-backed Afghan government and foreign troops that arrived after a 2001 US-led invasion ousted the hardline movement from government. There are nearly 70,000 international soldiers in Afghanistan, mostly under NATO command, battling Taliban insurgents whose tenacious rebellion is spreading from the rugged and lawless tribal regions around the border with Pakistan. Obama has decided to send 21,000 extra US troops and is considering deploying 10,000 more, while asking Europe to contribute by providing more soldiers as well as civilian support staff to train the police. In France, where he arrived Friday for a NATO summit, he said it was "probably more likely that Al-Qaeda would be able to launch a serious terrorist attack in Europe than in the United States, because of proximity." "We would like to see Europe have much more robust defence capabilities," he said.
