ADVERTISEMENT About 6,000 polling stations opened at 7 am (0500 GMT). The more than four million eligible voters have until 10 pm to cast their ballots. Results are expected during the night. Incumbent leader Ivan Gasparovic, 68, a lawyer and experienced politician, won the first round election two weeks ago with 46.7 percent of the vote -- well ahead of his female rival Iveta Radicova, 52, who scored 38 percent. "This is more than just a presidential election, it's a small plebiscite about whether people are satisfied with the governing coalition," daily newspaper SME wrote. Slovakia's economy, largely dependent on exports of cars and electronic goods produced mostly be foreign manufacturers, is forecast to contract this year after growing by 10.4 percent in 2007 and 6.4 percent in 2008. The government has so far fought the impact of the global economic crisis by means of spending cuts and by introducing a scrap-for-new scheme for car buyers in a bid to boost ailing sales to the local auto market. During the election campaign, Gasparovic was backed by two of the three governing coalition parties, while Radicova had the support of three opposition parties -- the Christian Democrats, the conservative KDH and ethnic-Hungarian SMK party. Going into round two, however, Radicova -- a less experienced but charismatic Christian Democrat lawmaker -- could benefit from those who supported the five other presidential candidates in the first round. The role of the president is mostly ceremonial in this parliamentary democracy that was established in 1993 after the fall of communism and the breakup of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia, which retains conservative traditions and a strong Catholic influence, is now a member of the European Union and the NATO military alliance. In the last few days, the campaign has centered around nationalist issues, as Radicova prevailed in several southern regions inhabited mostly by the Hungarian minority that makes up 10 percent of the country's four million voters. During the campaign, both candidates challenged Slovaks to get out and vote, hoping to win over those who stayed away from polling stations in the first round. Analysts expect a low turnout between 40-46 percent of all eligible voters, after only 44 percent showed up in the first round. There were no opinion polls between the first and second round and their chances were estimated to be even by the local press. "Whoever wins, it will be a close win," Pavol Haulik, a sociologist with the MVK polling agency, told AFP. In 2004, Gasparovic was elected in the secound round of the election by a majority of 59.91 percent of the votes, beating the former authoritarian prime minister Vladimir Meciar who had won the first round. Gasparovic has presided over the country in its first years as a NATO and EU member state. Slovaks have elected their head of the state directly since 1999.
