Chinese officials begin Latin America trips
AFP - 2 hours 22 minutes ago
BEIJING (AFP) - - Two senior Chinese officials have begun visits to Latin America, the government said Tuesday, on the heels of a landmark trip by President Hu Jintao in which he pledged closer ties with the region.

Vice President Xi Jinping arrived in Mexico for a three-day stay before continuing on to Jamaica, Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil, the foreign ministry said.
China's Vice Premier Hui Liangyu had arrived a day earlier on a separate trip to Argentina, it said.
The ministry quoted both officials as expressing hope of closer trade and other relations with their hosts, but gave no information on any possible commercial deals or other agreements.
The trips come three months after Hu was given a royal welcome on a tour of Costa Rica, Cuba and Peru in the latest sign of the giant Asian economy's growing clout in the developing world.
Hu visited Costa Rica to launch talks on a free trade pact and announced the conclusion of a similar agreement with Peru, reaffirming Beijing's friendship with communist ally Cuba in between.
Hu also pledged a higher Chinese profile in the region.
Chinese trade, cultural and military ties with Latin America remain small compared to the United States, the region's dominant power.
However, Chinese trade with the region has grown about ten-fold over the past decade as China's quest for new sources of raw materials has expanded and Latin American purchases of Chinese-made goods have also climbed.
A few years ago, Hu set a target of 100 billion dollars in trade with Latin America by 2010. It shattered that mark in 2007.
Trade with the region reached 124 billion dollars from January to October last year, the most recent period for which figures are available, according to the Commerce Ministry.
