French GDP set to contract by 0.5 pct in last quarter: central bank
AFP - Tuesday, November 18
PARIS (AFP) - - The French economy is likely to contract by 0.5 percent in the last quarter of the year, the Bank of France forecast in a first estimate on Monday, putting growth for the year at 0.9 percent.
The bank took as a base the first estimates for the third quarter by the national statistics institute INSEE that showed the economy narrowly escaping recession with growth of 0.1 percent.
The economy had contracted by 0.3 percent in the second quarter.
A recession is defined by two quarters running of negative growth from the previous quarterly figure.
The most-recent government estimate of growth for the whole of 2008 puts expansion of gross domestic product at 1.0 percent.
The Bank of France also published its monthly index of industrial confidence which showed a further sharp fall in October to 77 from 86 in September.
