Pakistan meets potential donors for crisis help
Reuters - 1 hour 4 minutes ago
ABU DHABI, Nov 17 - Pakistan and potential donors held a meeting in the United Arab Emirates on Monday, officials said, to look into providing support for the Asian country in the face of a balance of payments crisis.
Pakistani officials attended a "Friends of Pakistan" conference for talks with representatives of 14 countries, including the United States and Saudi Arabia, following a $7.6 billion IMF emergency loan agreed at the weekend as part of a broader economic rescue plan.
"The meeting was told about Pakistan's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, the overall state of the economy and where we need help," senior Pakistani foreign ministry official Aizaz Chaudhry told reporters in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi. "All these countries are willing to support Pakistan."
The international community is concerned that an economic meltdown in the nuclear-armed state could play into the hands of al Qaeda and allied Islamist militant groups seeking to destabilise the Muslim nation of 170 million.
Pakistani officials also voiced their country's need for cooperation on security, including police training, law enforcement and fighting the insurgency.
Another expert-level meeting will be held in January, followed by a ministerial meeting in February in Islamabad, Chaudhry said. (Reporting by Stanley Carvalho; writing by Ola Galal, editing by Mike Peacock)
