ADVERTISEMENT Abdul Wahab Khan and Shoaib Khan were among 12 students arrested in dramatic daytime raids in northern England in April. The case strained relations between Britain and Pakistan, especially after authorities failed to produce enough evidence to back up the terror charges but insisted on deporting the students anyway, after months of detention. They arrived in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, on Saturday. The students' lawyer, Amjad Malik, said they were subjected to frequent strip searches and searches by dogs while in detention, and that they had been served contaminated food. Wahab Khan told reporters his detention was "like a hell" and that his treatment showed that British authorities "do not know what ... justice means." The failure to charge the men was an embarrassment for Britain and Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who said police had disrupted "a very big terrorist plot." The arrests were rushed in part because one of Britain's top counterterrorism officers inadvertently exposed details of the operation to a photographer outside the prime minister's office. The British High Commission rejected the allegations of mistreatment as "unfounded," and said that apart from one incident of allegedly contaminated baked beans, no other complaints were made during their detention. "The U.K. government treats all those in detention in U.K. prisons fairly and humanely, regardless of their nationality, race or religion," the high commission said in a statement. Malik, the lawyer, said his clients should have been freed instead of being held for months. He said the students are still fighting their case in Britain and have taken up the issue with Pakistan's Interior Ministry.
