ADVERTISEMENT Statements from the two sides of Iraq's sectarian divide exposed the gulf opened up by Wednesday's attacks at the finance and foreign ministries, which also left some 600 people wounded. Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a Shiite, said on Wednesday the bombings were "a desperate attempt to derail the political process and affect the parliamentary elections," planned for January 2010. A statement from the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council, a powerful Shiite party that forms part of Maliki's governing coalition, said the country is facing a "comprehensive war" and not only "simple bombings here and there." It blamed the Sunni Arab minority which formed the backbone of toppled dictator Saddam Hussein's regime for the attacks. "The remains of the former Saddam regime who are accusing Shiites of being unbelievers are continuing their crimes against innocent Iraqis, revealing their criminal plans against people's freedom and dignity," it said. "Those attacks are clear evidence that there is a studied plan to kill more innocent Iraqis and destroy the wealth of Iraq," the statement said, calling on the United Nations and national governments to protect Iraqis. However, the Islamic Army in Iraq, which is regarded as the leading Sunni insurgent faction and includes officers of Saddam's disbanded military, laid the blame for the attacks on the Baghdad government and US forces. "We accuse the occupation forces, the government, political blocs whose militias are fighting each other of executing the attacks," said the statement which was posted on the insurgent group's website. "The Islamic Army in Iraq always condemns all attacks targeting innocent people. "The series of attacks that took place in Baghdad confirms that some factions in government and the political process want to build a state full of sectarianism and division." The Islamic Army in Iraq was formed in the wake of Saddam's overthrow in 2003 and has kidnapped foreigners and carried out beheadings. It cooperated with Al-Qaeda for a time before turning against the jihadists in 2007. Wednesday's truck bombings signalled the country's worst day of violence in 18 months, prompting outrage among Iraqis at the security failings that allowed the bombers to strike in the heart of the capital. On Thursday, Iraq arrested 11 police, army and intelligence chiefs after the government admitted that trucks of the size involved in the bombings should never have been allowed to pass the checkpoints that ring the city centre. A statement from the Iraqi National Patriotic and Islamic Front, a Baathist grouping loyal to Saddam, also blamed the government for the bombings. "With those attacks, the ugly crimes of political parties and the government, which came as a result of the occupation and was installed in the Green Zone, are still continuing against our patient Iraqi people," it said. "Accusations that the brave national resistance and the powers who are against the occupation have executed those attacks are weak and unfounded." Violence across the country on Friday saw six more deaths, according to police officials. Two people were killed and 20 wounded when a sticky bomb attached to a car exploded at a market in the Dora neighbourhood of south Baghdad. Separately, two army officers and two soldiers were perished when a stationary car exploded on a road 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of the restive northern city of Mosul. A fifth soldier was wounded. Near the northern oil city of Kirkuk, meanwhile, a Sunni Arab former MP and his wife and son were wounded when their car was attacked by unknown gunmen. Police also said the body of a member of the Kurdish peshmerga security force was found riddled with bullets at Khazar, 35 kilometres (22 miles) northeast of the main northern city of Mosul.
