Microsoft echoes Apple view on Adobe's Flash
BOSTON - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> joined archrival Apple Inc <AAPL.O> in criticizing Adobe Systems Inc's <ADBE.O> widely used Flash multimedia software, creating a rare bond among the two computing giants. Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs sharply criticized Flash, which is used to produce videos and games for many Internet sites on Thursday. Apple has banned Flash from its iPhone and iPad.
Apple stops Lala's music, Web-based iTunes expected
NEW YORK - Lala, the online music service, will be shut down on May 31, just five months after Apple Inc <AAPL.O> bought the start-up fueling speculation the iPod maker plans to launch a new Web-based version of iTunes. Apple is widely expected to use Lala's 'cloud' technology to integrate a Web subscription service into its popular iTunes Music Store. Such a service could also be used for other digital entertainment like TV shows and movies.
Wounded Nokia chief to face frustrated investors
HELSINKI - Nokia <NOK1V.HE> Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will next week face shareholders who are frustrated more than ever before. The share price of the world's largest cellphone maker has missed the market recovery. The firm will be one of the few to miss profit growth in 2010, the year of economic recovery, and software problems continue to haunt its smartphone lineup.
Smartphone shipments surge
HELSINKI said on Friday some 54 million smartphones -- handsets with computer-like functionality -- were shipped in the quarter, comprising 18 percent of the total handset market.
China, Russia, Canada again top USTR piracy list
WASHINGTON - The United States on Friday placed Russia on its list of countries with the worst records of preventing copyright theft for the 13th straight year, just days after the two nations agreed to intensify talks on Moscow's bid to join the World Trade Organization. The U.S. Trade Representative's office also put China on its "priority watch list" for the sixth consecutive year and Canada for the second. The list carries no threat of sanctions, but aims to shame governments into cracking down on piracy and updating their copyright laws.
Opera buys webmail firm for mobile messaging
HELSINKI - Opera Software <OPERA.OL>, the world's largest mobile browser firm, has bought Australian web-based email provider FastMail.FM, aiming to expand its own messaging offering to wireless devices. Norway-based Opera, whose wireless browser is more used than Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone browser, has had its own email offering for years.
Apple's Jobs slams Adobe's Flash technology
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> Chief Executive Steve Jobs on Thursday sharply criticized Adobe Systems <ADBE.O> popular Flash multimedia software, calling it unreliable and ill-suited for mobile devices, escalating a pitched battle between the two companies. Analysts said Jobs' pointed, nearly 1,700-word manifesto -- which Apple posted on its website -- helped push Adobe's shares down more than 1 percent, as it highlighted concerns about the future of Flash.
Microsoft shelves Courier, but may re-emerge
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> said on Thursday its "Courier" tablet PC, vaunted by some as a potential rival to Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad, will not be launched as a product, at least not in its current form. The device -- which has never been publicly acknowledged by Microsoft -- appeared to be a thin, twin-screen, pen and touch-operated portable PC that resembled an opened notebook, in photos published by tech blog Gizmodo.
Rosetta Stone suit vs Google dismissed
NEW YORK - Language software maker Rosetta Stone Inc's <RST.N> trademark infringement lawsuit against Google Inc <GOOG.O> has been dismissed by a federal judge. Rosetta has vowed to keep pursuing the case which has broad implications for trademark ownership in the digital age.
Wireless group pushes hunt for spectrum
WASHINGTON - The U.S. wireless industry is pressing a key senator to clear the way for a government study that could accelerate plans to free up airwaves for devices such as smart phones. Senator Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, has blocked the Senate's spectrum inventory measure from moving through the chamber because he believes the measure will add to the country's budget deficit due to its $22 million price tag.
