The Upper Delaware River is a source of drinking water for 17 million people, yet is at risk because chemicals injected into the ground during natural gas extraction in the Marcellus Shale produce toxic waste, according to American Rivers. "Until a thorough study of these critical impacts is completed, the Delaware River Basin Commission must not issue permits that will allow gas drilling in this watershed," the group warned. American Rivers, which has issued its list for the past 25 years, also called for the passage of the Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals Act to protect all watersheds within the Marcellus Shale region. The Monongahela River in Pennsylvania and West Virginia is part of that region and ranked ninth in the list. California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is in second place because of outdated water and flood management. According to American Rivers, the Delta's water supply system and flood controls "have decimated the ecosystem and closed the commercial salmon fishery." Plans to improve flood and supply systems do not ensure public safety and add more damage to the surrounding wildlife, the group said, and recommended using approaches such as flood bypasses and levees constructed further from the river's edge. Poor flood management has likewise put the Cedar River in Iowa at risk. The watershed is critical habitat for fish and wildlife, and a popular recreation area. Efforts by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to improve flood protection focus only on the use of levees and reservoirs, which would prevent floods in some areas but exacerbate flooding in other communities and destroy fish habitats, American Rivers said. Other waterways that made it to the list include West Virginia's Gauley River, endangered due to mountaintop removal mining, and the Upper Colorado River, which has been drained to dangerously low levels after more than a century of water diversions and recreational activities such as fishing, paddling and whitewater rafting.
