Nokia to launch new music phone model
HELSINKI - The world's largest mobile phone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> is preparing to launch a new music-bundled phone, photos from the firm's website showed on Friday. The 5235 "Comes with Music" model has a touch screen and a two megapixel camera, photos on the site showed. Nokia was not immediately available for comment.
U.S. teens ignore laws against texting while driving
LOS ANGELES - Karen Cordova, a 17-year-old high school student and part-time supermarket cashier, admits she sometimes texts friends while driving home from work late at night, lonely and bored. The Arizona teenager knows it's illegal in Phoenix and dangerous. She once almost drifted into oncoming traffic while looking at her phone.
U.S. wireless users satisfied, FCC should help more: GAO
WASHINGTON - Most customers are generally satisfied with their wireless telephone service, but many are frustrated with fees associated with ending their contract to switch carriers, according to a congressional study released on Thursday. The study by the Government Accountability Office also found that the Federal Communications Commission needs to improve how it processes customers' complaints.
Savvy kids can access explicit online worlds: FTC
WASHINGTON - Even a minimally savvy youngster can figure out how to access violent or explicitly sexual content in some virtual or Internet worlds, the Federal Trade Commission said on Thursday. In its survey of online worlds, where users create digital alter egos called avatars and interact with other users' avatars, the commission found that seven of the worlds with the most explicit sex and violence set a minimum age of 13 and an eighth set a minimum age of 18.
U.S. video game sales down 7.6 pct in November: NPD
SAN FRANCISCO - Sales of video game equipment and software in the United States fell 7.6 percent in November to $2.7 billion, research group NPD said on Thursday, as the struggling industry limped into the crucial holiday sales period. Hardware sales fell 13.4 percent, while software sales dropped 3.1 percent. The results were worse than some analysts had expected.
Craigslist founder testifies felt betrayed by eBay
GEORGETOWN, Del./SAN FRANCISCO - Craigslist founder Craig Newmark testified on Thursday he decided to trust eBay Inc <EBAY.O> after a key 2004 meeting in which then-CEO Meg Whitman and other executives said the Internet giant shared the small private company's core values. But he compared his feelings to that of a cheated spouse when he later learned that eBay had launched a rival online classifieds site, Kijiji.
Video games take bigger role in education
RALEIGH, North Carolina - Teachers trying to get students interested in molecular biology or space now have a new tool -- video games. As more children grow up playing video games, educators are partnering with game developers and scientists to create new interactive experiences for the classroom.
French army sides with Mozilla in Microsoft email war
PARIS/SAN FRANCISCO - A new email client unveiled by Mozilla this week contains code from an unusual source -- the French military, which decided the open source product was more secure than Microsoft's <MSFT.O> rival Outlook. The story of how the French government became involved with the open source movement, which has transformed much software around the world from proprietary to free, goes back six years.
Firms including Google to build Asia undersea cable
MUMBAI - A consortium including Google <GOOG.O> and KDDI Corp <9433.T> has signed a deal on Thursday to build and operate an international undersea cable system, estimated to cost $400 million. Globe Telecom <GLO.PS>, part owned by Singapore Telecommunications Ltd <STEL.SI>, and units of Bharti Airtel <BRTI.BO> and Reliance Communications <RLCM.BO> are also part of the consortium.
Nokia pulls plug on U.S. flagship stores
HELSINKI - Nokia <NOK1V.HE> will close its only two flagship stores in the United States, in a sign its retail strategy of flashy brand-booster outlets is needing a refresh. The world's biggest handset maker has suffered sharply in the economic downturn and is losing out in the battle for cool smartphone customers to Apple's iPhone, prompting it cut costs.
