Overnight call rates ended at 9.50 percent compared with Thursday's close of 9.60 percent. The range for money market overnight repo rates is from 9.50 percent to 12.50 percent. "There has been liquidity in the market since yesterday but rates are expected to rise tomorrow due to the scheduled outflow," said a brokerage dealer. Dealers said the next major inflow was scheduled for Dec. 17, of 15.1 billion rupees, and the next outflow was scheduled for Dec. 12, of 147.8 billion rupees. There were no scheduled inflows or outflows on Friday. The rupee ended firmer at 83.95/84.05 on Friday compared with Thursday's close of 84.12/22 because of support from remittances from Pakistanis working overseas. According to the latest data released by the central bank on Thursday, remittances from Pakistanis working overseas rose 29.20 percent to $3.83 billion in the first five months of the 2009/10 fiscal year. However, dealers said the rupee was expected to remain under pressure in the near-term. On Monday, the rupee ended at 84.15/20, its lowest close this year, after the central bank said commercial banks had to provide foreign currency for imports of crude oil. As part of Pakistan's commitments under an International Monetary Fund programme, the central bank said on Saturday it would stop providing foreign currency for imports for crude oil from Dec. 14. The State Bank of Pakistan stopped providing foreign exchange for furnace oil in February, and for diesel and other refined products in August. The rupee has weakened 5.78 percent this year after losing 22.12 percent last year. An IMF emergency loan package of $7.6 billion agreed in November last year helped avert a balance of payments crisis and shored up reserves. The IMF, which increased the loan to $11.3 billion in July, has disbursed more than $5 billion. In the stock market, the benchmark Karachi Stock Exchange <.KSE> 100-share ended 0.42 percent, or 37.91 points, higher at 9,037.30 on turnover of 68.24 million shares. Dealers said trade was dull for most of the day with investors staying on the sidelines amid worry about the security situation after recent bomb attacks. With local investors still nervous and foreigners soon getting ready to go on Christmas and New Year holidays, the market was likely to remain range-bound in the near-term, dealers said. The KSE-100 index has gained 57.08 percent this year after losing 57.9 percent last year.
