Feuding villages' clash leaves 1 dead in China

 AP - Thursday, March 26
BEIJING - Clashes between feuding villagers on southern China's Hainan Island left one man dead and nine others injured as a decades-old rivalry erupted into violence, state media said Thursday.

Police dispatched more than 300 officers to restore order and hunt for the suspects that started the brawl between the villages of Baoshang and Gancheng, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
In China's version of the infamous Hatfield and McCoy feud, the villages of Baoshang and Gancheng have been fighting each other for nearly eight decades over disputed land.
The clash, which began Monday, ended Wednesday after one man, 32-year-old Baoshang resident Zhang Ji, died after being stabbed in the head and arms, and six others were wounded, Xinhua said. Three others were hurt during the previous days' fighting, according to local officials.
More than 100 local officials were also sent to calm residents but the two sides remained heated as of late Wednesday.
Over the years, brawls have frequently erupted between the villages, which each have about 10,000 residents. The latest was one of the most violent in recent years.
The latest unrest was sparked after hundreds of residents from Gancheng village protested about attacks on four local children by unidentified assailants. The villagers believed the attackers were from Baoshang village but police made little headway in the cases.
A fight between two middle school students from the villages resulted in a violent protest on Monday, with villagers smashing vehicles and setting fire to the government building and police station, Fu Bo, an official with nearby Dongfang City was quoted as saying.
Tuesday night, villagers from Gancheng went to Baoshang, setting fire to a hotel and residences, Xinhua said, quoting a source. The fire was extinguished before it spread, but villagers ended up in a serious fight.
The Chinese feud echoes American folklore's most infamous clan rivalry _ the long-running battle between the Hatfields and McCoys, who lived in Appalachia. They have a storied and deadly history dating to Civil War times as they spent generations fighting over land, timber rights and even a pig.
