Hundreds march in Nordic cities against Gaza bombings
AFP - 2 hours 52 minutes ago
STOCKHOLM (AFP) - - Hundreds of demonstrators marched through Nordic cities and towns Monday to protest against Israeli air raids on the Gaza Strip, setting Israeli flags alight and chanting "Israel, murderer."
In Stockholm, organisers said some 1,000 people turned out while police said around 500 had gathered in one of the Swedish capital's main squares before marching to the Israeli embassy.
The demonstrators, mainly Muslim immigrants to Sweden, waved banners and shouted "Close the embassy", "Gaza solidarity" and "Israel, murderer", and set fire to an Israeli flag painted with a swastika.
"Enough blood! We've seen enough," Omar Mustafa, an organiser with the Swedish Islamic Association, told AFP.
"We don't see any reaction from the rest of the world while there is a massacre going on," he added.
Israel on Monday bombed Gaza for a third day in an "all-out war" on the Islamist group Hamas, as tanks massed on the border and the Islamists fired deadly rockets in retaliation for the blitz that has killed at least 318 people.
The Stockholm demonstration, which began at 1:30 pm (1230 GMT) wrapped up peacefully after a few hours.
Protest marches also took place in a number of other Swedish towns, as well as in several towns and cities in neighbouring Norway and Finland.
In Helsinki, around 150 people marched peacefully to the Israeli embassy, waving Palestinian flags and chanting "Free Palestine" and "Israel is a murderer".
"There is a lack of doctors and medication and soon a lack of food" in Gaza, the organiser of the march, Juhani Valo of the Association for Arab Nations' Friends, told AFP.
"I hope we will keep (demonstrating like) this as long as the situation in Gaza continues," he added.
Hundreds also gathered in front of the Norwegian parliament in Oslo for a demonstration organised by two pro-Palestinian organisations.
"This is not about Hamas. This is about Israel taking what it wants through war and by harassing Palestinians," said Inga Marta Thorkildsen, a member of parliament for the Socialist Left party, which is part of Norway's governing coalition.
"Anyone who wishes Israel a peaceful future must protest Israel's actions," she was quoted as saying by the NTB news agency.
Israel unleashed a massive bombardment against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday in retaliation for persistent rocket fire from the tiny enclave.
