Channel NewsAsia - Tuesday, December 30 Veteran MediaCorp artiste Chew Chor Meng announced last week that he has been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (or Kennedy's disease), an incurable disease where a sufferer's muscle wastes away. It was alarming news to his fans and also his fellow colleagues. MediaCorp artistes were all kept in the dark except for Chew's close friends. Rayson Tan and Chen Liping were among the firsts to learn of the news from Chew personally. Majority of the artistes learnt about it from news report. MediaCorp artistes, who were interviewed, praised Chew for his courage and expressed their concern and support for him. Tan is close friend of Chew and that was how he and Chen found out about Chew's condition earlier than everyone else did. Chen mentioned that while they were filming "Golden Path", Chew, who acted as her son, was still alright. "But all us do knew that he's been suffering from backache problem for a long time." Chen also praised Chew for being an outstanding actor, "He would always engage me to act while both of us have scenes together," she said. "He must have confidence in himself. I'm sure he'll be alright," she added, "Chor Meng has been very brave and he is accepting and dealing with this well." Another veteran actor, Huang Wen Yong, who has acted with Chew in "Springs of Life" and "Don't worry, be happy", also mentioned that backaches problems have been bugging Chew, but at that point in time, everyone thought that it was caused by a fall. When Huang saw news report, he immediately text Chew to express concern. Huang said that some audiences and his friends have also asked him to pass their messages to Chew. They have recommended doctors and even special remedies to Chew. Huang, the "messenger", assured that all the messages were sent to Chew. He added, "After reading the news, I feel that Chor Meng is very calm now. I hope he can fight this disease strongly!" Chen Han Wei, who has worked with Chew before, was in shock when he came across the news. He also text Chew immediately. Han Wei marveled at Chew's courage. He revealed that, sometimes when Chew speaks, it was a little baffled and Chew seems to have some difficult in his actions. However, he did not know that it was because Chew was sick. Many of Han Wei's friends and audiences had also gone through him to recommend doctors to Chew. Though not a close friend to Chew, Patricia Mok, after knowing the news from the media, also praised Chew for his courage. She recalls when they were filming "Love Blossom 2", everyone would try to accommodate to Chew and asked Chew to get sufficient rest as he was walking slightly differently and would feel pain if he stood for too long. Patricia has been on a wheelchair recently as she injured her toes, "It is very inconvenient when traveling in the public. I hope that there will be changes and more facilities in the future to better accommodate wheelchair-bound citizens!"
