KABUL (Reuters) - The Taliban said on Sunday they were holding prisoner one of two U.S. soldiers who strayed into territory controlled by the insurgents, and that the other had been killed.
The Taliban leadership would decide later on the fate of the captive, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters by phone from an undisclosed location.
The two U.S. servicemen were reported missing on Friday after failing to return in a vehicle they had taken from their compound in Kabul, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.
"We have the body of the dead soldier and the other one who is alive. We have taken them to a safe place," Mujahid said.
His account was disputed by a provincial official in Logar, a short but dangerous drive south of the capital, who said U.S. forces had recovered a body.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the soldier now captive was likely to have also been injured. They had ended up in a Taliban-held part of the province and liquor had been found in their vehicle, he said.
ISAF scrambled helicopters and planes to look for the pair after they went missing, but officials have declined to give anything but scant details since, prompting speculation that the two had been acting outside the chain of command.
ISAF's 150,000 troops in Afghanistan rarely move outside their bases unless on heavily armed patrols or convoys on predetermined routes.
Leaflets depicting photos of the two soldiers were distributed in Logar on Sunday.
"Now this soldier needs the help of Afghanistan's people and return him to his dear ones," read one leaflet.
Announcements on local radio stations offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to a rescue.
The only other ISAF service member believed held by the Taliban is Idaho National Guardsman Bowe Bergdahl, whose capture in June last year triggered a massive manhunt. His captors have issued videos of him denouncing the war, in what the U.S. military has called illegal propaganda.
Last month was the deadliest of the nine-year war in Afghanistan for foreign troops, with more than 100 killed.

What we need is for the US to get the heck out of Afghanistan and stop policing the world. We can no longer afford it

What we need is a “Sherman” strategy.

I remember Gen.Powell stating that we should always have a clear mission in mind, a way to achieve it and and clear exit strategy in place.
Doesn’t seem to be the case once again.
I hope the soldier is returned safely and am ssorry about the one that was killed.

Sherman Plan?! After all the money we’ve dumped on that place, that’s the last thing we need to do! Hell, they’ll be submitting claims and demanding assistance for generations if we do that! Not to mention the fact that there’s nothing left to burn there, anyway.
If this story is right on the facts, those two sailors are incredibly stupid. If these two idiots really did wander off in a truck to get loaded outside their FOB in indian country, then screw em’! We had the same problem when I was in Iraq. An Iraqi who was Shake-and-Baked into a soldier on the military’s Arabic speaker program ran off the reservation in 2006 to get drunk, or whatever, and ended up kidnapped and dead. We all felt like it wasn’t worth the effort to look for him since he did it to himself. These two selfish clowns merely waste others’ time, attention, and resources and place others in the same danger.
Way to go, squids!

@Iceman2K – I see you believe in the Republidick strategy that saying things that are untrue often enough makes them true. I guess you believe Viet Nam was Nixon’s war.
Where were you in 2002 when the debate was on to invade Afghanistan? Were you opposed to it then? Did you stand up in 2007 and oppose continuing the war? Of course not.
We all know that Obama has to play the hand Bush dealt him. Two wars, bad economy and divided country. All you do is stand in the corner and whine about things anonymously. If you can’t be constructive and honest, move to some other country.

That first poster seems to be trying to get us into following Kabbalah. Look it up online and you learn even Jews consider it to be cultist nonsense. Not to leave out the fact that the Kabbalah Center, which pushes this stuff, is actually a giant con that seeks to suck in donations which are spent on their leadership so they can live in high style. After the Asian Tsunami, they took donations for aid, only to buy their own products at inflated prices, such as bottles of their holy drinking water for delivery to the needy. Oh, and they donated copies of their own books, costing 280$ for a full set, to the victims. I’m sure hungry people appreciated that! The leader of this cult has stated the Holocaust happened because the Jews didn’t “use” Kabbalah to protect themselves. I don’t know about you, but that seems just a little offensive if you ask me. Also, former members of this sect claim it is nothing more than a brainwashing cult. Looking into the Kabbalah Cult, you learn that a surprising number of their members, including many young Hollywood teen stars, end up with a variety of mental problems. It’s all very interesting once you start to look into it. Here’s a good starting point: http://www.soundoffcolumn.com/kaballah_cult.htm

So ignore that idiot who posted first. He’s a plant…
