Sri Lankan hostage rescued in Philippines
AFP - Thursday, June 4
ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (AFP) - - A Sri Lankan peace activist kidnapped by Islamic militants in the southern Philippines almost four months ago has been safely released, police said Thursday.

Umar Jaleel was rescued late Wednesday from his Abu Sayyaf captors in the town of Tipo-Tipo on Basilan island, regional police spokesman Superintendent Danilo Bacas said.
No other details were released. Jaleel's group, the Brussels-based Nonviolent Peaceforce, said he was freed after negotiations facilitated by local contacts in Basilan.
Jaleel was seized by teenaged gunmen on February 13. Police had initially said he was kidnapped by an unknown gang but subsequently pointed to Abu Sayyaf, which has been blamed for the country's worst militant attacks.
A month before Jaleel was taken, the Abu Sayyaf kidnapped three Red Cross workers, one of whom is still being held.
The Nonviolent Peaceforce, welcomed Jaleel's release, saying it was grateful for his release and stressing that no ransom was paid.
"We are not discouraged by this traumatic event. This is even more reason to intensify our efforts in support local work that promotes peaceful co-existence," the group's executive director Mel Duncan in a statement.
He said Jaleel was "en route to medical facilities" and that he would be reunited with his family in Sri Lanka soon.
Jaleel, a Sri Lankan Muslim, is among 17 international Nonviolent Peaceforce staff working in the troubled southern Philippine region, where they are trying to improve relations between Christians and Muslims.
