Microsoft resumes Windows 7 test downloads
NEW YORK - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> launched downloads of the public test version of its new version of Windows on Saturday, after a one-day delay due to overwhelming demand. The "beta" launch of the highly anticipated update to Microsoft's Windows franchise was to began on Friday, but the company had to halt downloads to add more servers.
Dell settles state consumer protection claims
SAN FRANCISCO - Dell Inc <DELL.O> has agreed to pay $3.35 million in a 34-state settlement of allegations that the personal computer maker mislead consumers on financing, warranties and rebates. State attorneys general said on Monday that Dell had engaged in "deceptive" financing promotions, promising zero-percent financing but charging them higher rates.
Pro-mafia Facebook pages cause alarm in Italy
ROME - Leading Italian anti-mafia activists expressed alarm on Monday that Facebook pages dedicated to praise of some of Cosa Nostra's most notorious and bloody bosses have attracted hundreds of young admirers. "Fan clubs" of such jailed mafia bosses as Bernardo Provenzano, arrested in 2006 after nearly four decades on the run, and Toto Riina, nabbed in 1993 after 24 years at large, have appeared on Italian pages of the social networking site.
Supreme Court asks for government view on Cablevision DVR case
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday asked for the federal government's views of an appeal by film studios and television networks of a ruling that would allow a new digital video recorder service by New York cable operator Cablevision Systems Corp <CVC.N>. At issue in the case is a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York that Cablevision's proposed service would not directly infringe the copyrights of the media companies that produce movies and television programs.

LAS VEGAS - Top technology companies came to Las Vegas to show off their latest innovations in consumer electronics, but despite the plethora of TVs, computers, phones, cameras and other gadgets on display, it was clear the industry is bracing for a very tough year. While there were a few bright spots at this year's subdued Consumer Electronics Show -- such as low-cost mini-laptops known as netbooks -- what emerged was a picture of scaled-back investment plans, more job cuts and stagnant growth with no signs of improvement.
Forrester sees 2009 tech spending fall
NEW YORK - Weakening economies will push spending on information technology products and services down 3 percent this year after seven years of growth, according to Forrester Research. In its latest report released on Tuesday, the technology research firm said that recessions in the United States and other countries would be the main driver for slower spending and that currency fluctuations will be a secondary factor.
China closes 91 websites in crackdown
BEIJING - China has shut down 91 websites for pornographic and other "vulgar" content, as well as a political blog portal, since announcing its latest bid to ensure Internet morality, state media said on Monday. China's ruling Communist Party is wary of threats to its grip on information and has conducted numerous censorship efforts targeting pornography, political criticism and Web scams, but officials flagged tougher steps this time.
Kazakh PM tells ministers "get blogging"
ASTANA - Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov Monday told his ministers to start personal blogs to get them closer to the people of the former Soviet state. "I have opened a blog on the government website," Masimov told a government meeting. "So I order all ministers... to start personal blogs where people will be able to ask you questions that you must answer."
Aerospace firm EADS to unveil laser sniper spotter
PARIS - Snipers or assassins could be spotted in their nests before even firing a shot thanks to laser surveillance technology to be unveiled in Britain Tuesday. European and U.S. companies are accelerating research into a anti-sniper defenses in response to threats in Afghanistan and Iraq and at home -- but most systems use acoustic or thermal sensors that depend on waiting for the first shot.
Netbooks take center stage at CES
LAS VEGAS - Netbooks were everywhere and on everyone's lips at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, expanding as a category of small laptop PCs that are rewriting the rules for the struggling computer industry. While nearly every major PC makers had a new netbook on display at the four-day show ending on Sunday, no two companies seemed to agree on what the rules are to define this segment of tiny, ultra-portable notebooks.
