S.Korea bonds rally on quantitative easing talk

SEOUL, Sept 24 - South Korean government bond prices firmed early on Friday, catching up with gains in U.S. debt prices made during the local national holiday on expectations for more quantitative easing by the Federal Reserve.

The five-year treasury yield <KRTSY5Y=KQ> fell six basis points to 3.88 percent.

The benchmark yield declined to a 20-month trough of 3.82 percent last week, shedding half a percentage point in a month.

"The bullish tone is expected to continue," said a brokerage dealer. "Given the growing talk of U.S. quantitative easing, it will take substantial time for South Korea to normalise monetary policy."

The Bank of Korea kept its policy rate unchanged for a second straight month in September following a surprise rise in July.

The U.S. Fed signalled on Tuesday at its policy-setting meeting that it stood ready to support the economy with additional debt purchases.

South Korean financial markets were closed between Tuesday and Thursday for the full-moon Chuseok holiday.

Bond swaps also fell, with the one-year interest rate swap <KRQMCD1Y=KMBC> down four basis points to 2.975 percent, tightening its spread over the three-month certificate of deposit rate <KRCD=KQ>.

South Korean exports rose 48.7 percent in the first 20 days of this month from a year earlier, while imports advanced by 33.2 percent in the same period, the country's customs office said. [ID:nSEV000150]

The front-end three-year treasury futures December contract <KTBc1> gained 0.20 points to 112.00 as of 0046 GMT, after the September contract expired on Monday. (Reporting by Kim Yeon-hee and Chang Tae-min; Editing by Chris Lewis)
