Skype could be designated illegal in China

BEIJING/NEW YORK - China will crack down on what it called illegal Internet telephone providers, according to a circular from the Chinese government, a policy that could hurt the popular service Skype. The statement, from the powerful Ministry of Information and Industry Technology, did not mention any phone companies by name.

Website aims to be Facebook for gays in military

TORONTO - After nearly two decades of hearing "don't ask, don't tell," gay U.S. military men and women are now hearing, "do ask, do tell," and even, "find a friend" from a new social network website, Out Military. Launched just over a week ago at http://outmilitary.com, the site comes on the heels of President Barack Obama signing a new law repealing the so-called "don't ask, don't tell" rule, established in 1993, that prevented gay men and lesbians from openly serving in the armed forces.

Facebook tops Google as most visited site in U.S.

NEW YORK - Facebook surpassed Google for the first time as the most visited website in the United States for most of 2010. The social network site edged out Google.com <GOOG.O> with 8.9 percent of all U.S. visits between January and November 2010, while Google.com ranked second with about 7.2 percent of all visits, according to online measurement service Experian Hitwise.

Craig McCaw resigns as Clearwire chairman

NEW YORK - - Wireless pioneer Craig McCaw has resigned as chairman of Clearwire Corp <CLWR.O> days ahead of a deadline on critical financial decision by its majority shareholder, Sprint Nextel <S.N>. Clearwire gave no reason for McCaw's departure but said it was not due to "any disagreements with the company on any matters relating to its operations, policies, or practices."

Virus attacks Android phones in China: researchers

BOSTON - A powerful virus targeting smart phones in China running Google Inc's <GOOG.O> Android operating system may represent the most sophisticated bug to target mobile devices to date, security researchers said on Thursday. Anti-virus firm Lookout Mobile Security estimates that the number of phones that have been infected by the virus, dubbed Geinimi, ranges from the tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands.

"Social Network" spells Hammer time for actor Armie

LOS ANGELES - They look so much alike in Oscar-hopeful film "The Social Network," they could be one man, and in fact, they are. But what the Winklevoss twins share with the actor who plays them has less to do with looks and more with their privileged background. The actor, 24 year-old Armie Hammer, is the great grandson of oil tycoon and philanthropist Armand Hammer. He was blessed with good looks and a prominent family tree, like the Winklevoss'. But the similarities seem to stop there.

RIM dismisses claims of PlayBook battery weakness

TORONTO - Research In Motion <RIM.TO> defended its embryonic PlayBook tablet computer against charges its battery life is shorter than that of rivals already on the market, saying power management will be comparable. Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu earlier this week cited unnamed sources saying the PlayBook's battery lasts "a few hours" compared with six hours for Samsung's <005930.KS> Galaxy Tab and 10 hours for Apple's <AAPL.O> iPad.

Barnes & Noble: e-books take lead in online sales

NEW YORK - Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> said that sales of digital books made through its website now exceed those of traditional books that it sells online. Barnes & Noble, which introduced its Nook electronic reader last year to compete with Amazon.com Inc's <AMZN.O> Kindle, said customers bought or downloaded 1 million e-books via the Nook on Christmas Day.

Imax shares jump on report of possible Sony bid

NEW YORK/TORONTO - Shares of Imax Corp <IMAX.O> <IMX.TO> jumped as much as 20 percent on Friday after a media report suggested Sony Corp <6758.T> may be readying a bid for the big-screen movie company at more than $40 per share. Britain's Daily Mail reported late on Thursday that Sony was interested in the Canadian-based movie chain, without citing sources. The newspaper also named Walt Disney Co <DIS.N> as a possible suitor, according to "industry sources".

Wi-Lan says patent suit delay to aid settlement talks

BANGALORE - Technology licensing firm Wi-Lan Inc <WIN.TO> said it would get more time to discuss infringement settlements with defendants as a U.S. federal court extended the trial date by about a month, after redefining a term in a patent related to its wireless products. The Canadian company had served notice in October 2007 to several companies, including Apple Inc <AAPL.O>, Dell Inc <DELL.O>, Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> and Intel Corp <INTC.O> for infringement of its wireless patents.
