Thai summit protest leader arrested: police

 AFP - 1 hour 11 minutes ago
BANGKOK (AFP) - - Thai police Sunday arrested the leader of anti-government protesters who wrecked an Asian summit, prompting a threat of further action by supporters if he is not released.

Police said Arisman Pongreungrong was detained at his home in the capital following his return to Bangkok.
"The police went to arrest Arisman Pongreungrong at his house on the charge of inciting protesters to kidnap the prime minister and cause unrest in the country," a police spokesman said.
He said Arisman had cooperated with authorities who arrested him and took him to a police station in Bangkok's suburbs for questionning.
"There will be further arrests, but right now the police are gathering evidence," the spokesman added.
Arisman led at least 1,000 protesters loyal to ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who overwhelmed police lines Saturday and stormed the hotel hosting the sum mit of Asian leaders.
Authorities had to cancel the event and send helicopters to evacuate foreign leaders already in attendance.
But protest leaders threatened to incite further unrest unless Arisman was immediately released.
Clad in red to symbolise loyalty to Thaksin, rally leader Nattawut Saikur told a 2,000-strong crowd outside government offices in Bangkok that if police did not release Arisman later in the day, "the red shirts in other provinces around the country will take action."
Police said a crowd of 1,800 protesters had also gathered outside the court that is due to rule on Arisman's further detention.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva vowed earlier Sunday to take legal action against the protesters, who accuse him of being a stooge of the military.
They are also furious his government has so far failed to prosecute rival demonstrators for blockading Bangkok's two airports late last year, stranding thousands of foreign tourists and aggravating the crisis that led to Abhisit taking office.
His four-month-old coalition government, which succeeded an administration led by Thaksin's allies, has faced weeks of escalating protests peaking with the summit closure.
