Maloney's Senate Bid July 2, 2009 12:45 p.m. EST --- Advertisment --- Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor Albany, NY (AHN) - Some of the divisiveness that is expected to roil New York Democrats next year has begun to unravel as Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) prepares to launch her campaign for the seat of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). The New York Daily News on Wednesday reported that Maloney, a 63-year-old who served for a decade in the New York City Council before her first term in Congress in 1993, plans to announce her bid in two weeks. The Democratic establishment ostensibly wants Gillibrand to be next year's nominee. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has taken on Gillibrand under his wing as a pseudo-protege, and former President Bill Clinton has campaigned for her. In May, President Barack Obama had persuaded Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) not to run next year. Gillibrand was appointed by New York Gov. David Paterson in January to fill Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's Senate seat until November 2010. The 42-year-old is the youngest member of the Senate and has been facing liberal criticisms since her appointment for her support for gun rights. The criticisms apparently have not discouraged Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Bob Menendez, who said in a statement after Israel announced his decision, "New Yorkers have one of the strongest Congressional delegations in the country and clearly Senator Gillibrand is making them proud as their new Senator. She's working around the clock, traveling the state, delivering for New York, and given her strong track record thus far, looks to be well-positioned for 2010. The DSCC looks forward to continuing working with her to make sure she well-prepared for her race." Maloney has a long record of nine terms to tout, current and previous chairmanships of the Joint Economic Committee, the House Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit and the Democratic Task Force on Homeland Security. She also has authorship of the landmark Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights signed into law by the President this year. Yet her campaign, as early as now when it is still unofficial, will clearly be a tough one. A group of Democrats led by former party state chairperson Judith Hope have sent her a letter asking her to stay in the House, according to Newsday. Joe Trippi, a Maloney adviser who was head of former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean's 2004 White House campaign, has told the New York Times, "They really don't want Gillibrand challenged, because if she is challenged, she could be beaten." A survey of polls indicates that public opinion seems to be also divided about the two New York lawmakers. A Quinnipiac University poll on June 21 has Maloney barely ahead with 27 percent support as candidate in the 2010 Senate primary, while Gillibrand has 23 percent. Both women also have statistically identical favorability ratings, with 25 percent of voters saying they have a favorable opinion of Gillibrand and 10 percent saying they view her unfavorably, and Maloney getting a 28 and 8 percent, respectively. A more recent June 25 Marist poll has Gillibrand leading slightly with 37 percent support among primary voters and Maloney taking 28 percent. In both polls, the two women perform nearly the same in a general election match-up with Rep. Peter King (R-NY), a Republican who has indicated that he may not run next year.
