Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi, pictured last year, has urged people to take to the streets this week to mark the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution in an interview with the Sunday Telegraph.
LONDON (AFP) - – Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi has urged people to take to the streets this week to mark the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution in an interview with the Sunday Telegraph.
Ebadi, who lives in exile in London, said she supported calls for peaceful protests against the Iranian government.
"I believe people should take part in the demonstration," she told the London-based newspaper.
"They should ask for their rights, but they should do it peacefully. Obviously the regime wants people to be violent because it gives them an excuse to crack down, and people must not give them that excuse."
The Islamic revolution saw the shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, leave Iran in January 1979 while Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned from exile in France the following month and became supreme leader.
Ebadi's comments came amid growing tensions over a possible deal between the West and Iran on its disputed nuclear programme.
Western impatience with Iran is growing after it failed to respond clearly to a proposal for sending some of its uranium abroad for enrichment.
