ROSABLANCHE PASS, Switzerland (AFP) - – High in the Swiss Alps, the sound of applause, cheering and cowbells rang through the dawn as hundreds of weary, wheezing but determined mountaineers hauled themselves up the snowbound Rosablanche pass. One by one they reached the top, pausing to catch their breath in the thin air at 3,150 metres (10,334 feet) as they gathered with their team mates -- brothers, sisters, relatives, friends or colleagues. "I'm happy, the hardest is over," gasped Lara Allet, 33. Amid the fuss, the competitors stepped onto the skis they had carried on their backs during the steep climb, dashing off in threesomes on a final 10 kilometre downhill stretch to the finishing line in the southwestern resort of Verbier. Crowds of supporters had somehow made it up to this isolated perch in the mountains early on Thursday to cheer on the Glacier Patrol. Switzerland's legendary 53 kilometre (33 mile) high altitude ski team race rivals a big city marathon in popularity, and the top level event overnight into Saturday will be broadcast live on Swiss television. Many of the amateur threesomes had skied, hiked, dragged themselves and cajoled each other across pristine slopes and valleys and up rocky climbs, by hook or by crook, since they left Zermatt hours earlier at the dead of night. "You feel so small up there," said Serge Clement, who was taking part in his 11th race at the age of 52. "You always feel apprehensive during the night but you have to get through and we're so happy when daylight appears." Some 4,200 people, half of them civilians, take part in the now largely annual event, which started out in 1943 as an endurance test for World War II army border patrols high in southwestern Switzerland. It is still organised by the Swiss army but split up into several races open to teams of over 20 year-olds, provided they are highly competent tour skiers. On Saturday, specialists including military squads from abroad will aim to break the six hour 18 minute record on the full course between Zermatt and Verbier. Equipped with a miner's lamp, bulky tour skis, helmet, ice pick, spade and avalanche detector each, as well as food and drink, the threesomes are often roped together as a precaution, led by their captain. Crevasses, which can be hidden under the snow, remain an ever present danger, all the more so at night, despite the clear weather this year. "Each time we say 'that's enough, it's the last time' but we always start out again. It's like a drug, we love this," Clement's brother Gerard admitted. And all agree that with its physical demands, which are amplified by the altitudes reaching up to nearly 3,600 metres (11,800 feet), the need for mountain knowhow and mental strength, the race has the stature of "a myth". "On top of that it's not a race like any other because we're in teams of three," explained Loubna Georges, who tackled the shorter half-length course with two friends in their first attempt this year. "You have to wait for each other, just stick together: someone always snaps, each one of us at a different moment." "There's always some kind of risk or danger in the mountains, so of course you feel apprehensive," added Georges, a mother of two. "It's true that some people think we're mad," said Serge Clement, who relishes the team spirit as well as the personal challenge. Despite the sub zero overnight temperatures, thirst turned out to be more of a problem this year as the relatively clement conditions spared the early competitors from a strong northeasterly wind and the more common threat of frostbite. "We're ready to suffer, we've been training since August," said Nicolas Jordan, before he set off.
