Russia to punish foreign firms that arm Georgia: envoy

 AFP - Saturday, July 25
MOSCOW (AFP) - - Russia will impose sanctions on US firms or any others that provide weapons to Georgia, Moscow's NATO envoy said Friday, after Washington reaffirmed its military support for the ex-Soviet republic.

"We have a presidential decree that has come out saying that Russia will impose sanctions on those foreign enterprises which continue to participate in the militarisation of Georgia," envoy Dmitry Rogozin said in an interview with Echo of Moscow radio.
"This decree has no exceptions, and if it is proven that some manufacturer, whether in the Arctic or in America, is involved in the supply of offensive arms, this decree will apply to them."
Rogozin did not specify which document he was referring to.
Last January however, President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree ordering the Russian government to take "special economic measures" against foreign firms delivering arms to Georgia.
That came after Washington announced on October 24 it was imposing sanctions on companies from several countries, including Russia's state weapons contractor Rosoboronexport, for allegedly violating a US ban on arms sales to Iran.
Rogozin's comments came one day after US Vice President Joe Biden visited Georgia in a show of support for the pro-Western country, a year after it fought a brief war with Russia.
During his visit to Tbilisi, Biden said the United States was working on "maintaining" the Georgian military but said these efforts were limited to "planning, training, organization" -- not supply of weapons.
However, in a sign of the tensions surrounding the issue, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said Moscow was "deeply concerned" about the re-arming of Georgia's military and was taking "concrete measures" to stop it.
Russia and Georgia have been at loggerheads since last August when they fought a war over the rebel region of South Ossetia.
Since then Moscow has been deeply suspicious of any signs of military cooperation between Georgia and the West.
