Indonesian police in massive manhunt a week after blasts
AFP - Saturday, July 25
JAKARTA (AFP) - - A week after twin suicide blasts in Jakarta killed seven people and marked a return of terror to Indonesia, police Friday appeared no closer to cracking the Islamist network believed responsible.

Police said they had stepped up the hunt for alleged terrorist mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top who is believed to be behind the attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in central Jakarta last Friday.
National police chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri said investigators were in a "race" to catch Noordin, whose network is linked to Al-Qaeda and the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) regional Islamist movement.
"There is no loophole. This is a race between us and that group," he said after attending Friday prayers, referring to the network which goes by various names including Brigade Firaqul Maut (Dare-to-Die Brigade).
He mentioned Syaifudin Zuhri, alias Sabit, who was caught in the Central Java district of Cilacap on June 21, and several other people believed linked to Noordin and JI who had been detained in recent months.
Zuhri is the uncle of Noordin's father-in-law and provided training and advice to a cell that was arrested in Palembang, Sumatra, last year, according to a report released Friday by the International Crisis Group (ICG) think tank.
Police said they were also searching for Noordin's father-in-law, who disappeared after bomb-making material was found buried in the yard at his Cilacap house days before the hotel attacks.
A woman believed to be Malaysian-born Noordin's third wife was arrested there earlier in the week, although her lawyers say she had no idea her husband was one of Asia's most wanted men and believed his name was Abdul Halim.
A suspected would-be suicide bomber who had been trained by Noordin's group was arrested in Cilacap on Thursday, police said.
Noordin allegedly masterminded suicide bombings at the Marriott in 2003, the Australian embassy in 2004 and Bali restaurants in 2005.
Police have come close to catching him several times and killed his operations chief Azhari in a shootout in 2005, but the Malaysian has been adept at using JI family and school connections to escape detection.
"Noordin seems to have been living in the Cilacap area at least since 2006 and perhaps even earlier, finding shelter and protection from JI-linked families," the ICG report said.
Police are looking for two men believed to have been directly involved in last week's blasts, including a man who reportedly worked as a florist at the hotels and helped the bombers penetrate their targets.
The ICG report said the bombers showed a high degree of sophistication to breach airport-style hotel security and target a weekly breakfast meeting of foreign and Indonesian business leaders at the Marriott.
The Marriott bomber stayed at the hotel as a cash-paying guest for two days, preparing at least two bombs inside Room 1808 before walking directly into a secluded business meeting off the main lobby and blowing himself up.
A third bomb found in Room 1808 had been set to explode before the suicide blasts -- possibly in a bid to drive guests toward the lobby to maximise the carnage -- but it failed to explode, police said Thursday.
Three Australians and a New Zealander -- businessmen and a diplomat who were guests at the business meeting -- were killed at the Marriott along with an Indonesian hotel worker.
Two Dutch tourists died minutes later when the second bomber, aged 20 to 40 years according to police, blew himself up in the cafe of the adjacent Ritz-Carlton.
The coordinated blasts were the first major terror strike in the mainly Muslim country since 2005, shattering a period of calm which had seen strong economic growth and stability under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Yudhoyono was re-elected in a landslide to a second five-year term on July 8, the election commission confirmed Friday.
