Police probe claims Gibson abused ex-girlfriend

LOS ANGELES - Law enforcement officials said on Thursday they are looking into claims that Oscar-winning director and actor Mel Gibson physically abused his former girlfriend and the mother of one of his children. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's office released a statement saying it was "gathering information regarding the allegations" and would disclose no other details because the probe was preliminary.

Fresh faces add zest to Emmy nominations

LOS ANGELES - Quirky musical comedy "Glee" and 1960s advertising drama series "Mad Men" led the nominations on Thursday for primetime Emmy Awards in a cross section of new faces and old TV favorites. Newcomer "Glee", which features a group of high school misfits in a show choir, garnered 19 nominations including best comedy series and acting nods for its stars Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele and Jane Lynch and guest performers Neil Patrick Harris and Kristin Chenoweth.

Drake NY concert cancelled after security concerns

NEW YORK - A second free Drake concert in New York has been canceled after security concerns were raised by the city's police department. The Toronto rapper, whose debut album recently opened at No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart, was in talks to perform in Central Park on July 16 as part of ABC's "Good Morning America" summer concert series. According to the Daily News, the plans were scrapped after the NYPD told the city's Parks Department to bolster its security efforts.

Whose Emmy strategies worked, and whose didn't?

LOS ANGELES - Given all the Emmy submission gamesmanship this season, it's worth checking in on which strategies were successful and which failed to deliver that golden nomination. The most high-profile Emmy strategists this year were the "Modern Family" cast. The ensemble submitted solely in the supporting actor and actress comedy categories. That worked great: They earned five nominations.

"Inception" is no dream for marketers

LOS ANGELES - Movie fans may wish more original films were wedged into the usual summer mix of remakes and sequels, but marketing executives know enough to be careful what they wish for. Case in point: the Warner Bros. thriller "Inception," opening on July 16.

Lohan lawyer says jail time "unfair," then quits

LOS ANGELES - The attorney for Lindsay Lohan resigned on Thursday even as she issued a statement calling the jail sentence imposed on the troubled actress this week for violating probation, "harsh and unfair." A spokeswoman for attorney Shawn Chapman Holley confirmed the lawyer had left Lohan's case, but she did not have any details on a reason why or who had replaced Holley.

Winners and losers emerge at summer box office midpoint

LOS ANGELES - Much as the baseball world takes stock of who's hot and who's not with its midseason All-Star game, Hollywood has a good sense of summer winners and losers once Independence Day is torn from the movie release calendar. Warner Bros. and Fox have sipped from a glass half empty so far during the hottest box office season of the year, while Paramount has tied one on from a cup that runneth over. Paramount tops seasonal rankings by a comfortable margin, thanks to its distribution of a lucrative DreamWorks Animation tentpole as well as its own summer-launching of "Iron Man 2," a $309 million domestic grosser.

Scorsese sued by receiver for celebrity money man

NEW YORK - Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese was sued on Thursday for $600,000 for bookkeeping costs and other services provided by jailed financial advisor Kenneth Starr. Starr Investment Advisors managed Scorsese's money from 2006 to 2010, but "The Departed" director failed to pay the company's fee of five percent of earned income, according to a complaint filed by company receiver Aurora Cassirer in New York State Supreme court.

A Minute With: Jane Lynch on her "Glee"-filled year

LOS ANGELES - It's been a 'Glee'-filled year for character actress Jane Lynch who, after two decades of guest TV and movie roles, became the scene stealer of TV musical comedy "Glee", married her girlfriend, and started filling her shelves with awards. Lynch, 50, who plays acid, scheming cheerleader coach Sue Sylvester in "Glee", was nominated on Thursday for U.S. television's top honor, an Emmy, for her role as Sylvester. Also, she is receiving an achievement award this week from the Outfest film festival in Los Angeles.

HBO dominates Emmy nods for 10th straight year

LOS ANGELES - HBO reigned supreme in Emmy nominations for a 10th straight year on Thursday as the premium cable channel garnered 101 nods in the prime-time awards race, besting all television networks and its own year-ago tally. HBO, the most Emmy-nominated network every year since 2001, earned nods for best drama series for the popular vampire show, "True Blood," best comedy series for Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" as well as 24 nods for its World War Two mini-series "The Pacific."
