The SBP raised its key rate by 50 basis points to 14 percent at its last review on Nov. 29. Following are some of the main points the SBP made when setting monetary policy: * There has been an understanding that the government will restrict its borrowing from the central bank to below the end September stock of 1290 billion rupees . * There seems to be some respite from the government borrowing from the SBP. * Outstanding stock of these borrowings, which had increased to 1,500 billion rupees by mid-December, had decreased to about 1,277 billion rupees by Jan. 25, which is an encouraging development. * The current account surplus of $26 million for the first half of fiscal year 2010/11 indicates that the risk of fiscal problems slipping into the external account has not so far materialised. * Improved external current account and stable financial markets allow for some optimism. * Inflationary pressures have remained at elevated levels and annual inflation rose to 15.5 percent in December. * SBP revised its projection of average inflation for fiscal year 2010/11 in the range of 15 to 16 percent. * Inflation is likely to remain in double digits in fiscal year 2011/12. * The critical measures to bring inflation under control would be fiscal consolidation and reduction in the fiscal deficit and government borrowings from the central bank. * It is expected tangible steps by the government will be taken to steer the economy back on track. * A delicate balance needs to be struck between risks to inflation and economic growth.
