Strapped with explosives packed with nails, the young man walked up to the gate of the press club in the northwestern city of Peshawar and blew himself up as police tried to stop him entering the building, officials said. Attacks on civilian targets are escalating in the city of 2.5 million people on the edge of Pakistan's tribal belt on the Afghan border, an area Washington brands the most dangerous place on Earth and the chief sanctuary of Al-Qaeda. The Taliban have stepped up strikes this year to avenge Pakistan military operations to eradicate their northwest strongholds and have threatened the media, but Tuesday's blast was deadliest bomb yet targeting the press. "I was coming out of the canteen when I suddenly heard a huge blast. Smoke engulfed the building immediately and when I reached the spot, I saw human organs littered on the ground," said television journalist Nisar Mohammad Khan. The force of the explosion blew out the windows at the press club, damaged the guard hut and ripped through nearby vehicles, said witnesses. "He was stopped by police deployed outside. When the police official started searching him, the attacker blew himself up," Peshawar police chief Liaquat Ali told reporters at the scene. "He was under 20 with pimples on his face and short," Ali told AFP. Doctor Zafar Iqbal at Peshawar's main Lady Reading Hospital said the blast killed three people -- a policeman, a press club employee and a woman -- while 17 others were wounded. Police said four journalists were among the wounded. Bomb disposal squad chief Tanveer Ahmed said most of the casualties were caused by steel pellets and nails stuffed in the suicide bomber's vest. The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists demanded the government boost security at press clubs, accusing the government of not doing enough to protect the media and calling for nationwide protest rallies. "The press club was already receiving threats and warning letters -- journalists here are practically working in a war zone," said the Peshawar club president, Shamim Shahid. "The role of the media is even more important in this situation. We will continue our role and will tell the truth in any case," he told AFP. Fayaz Aziz, a photographer for the daily Jang newspaper, said local papers had received threats from the Taliban complaining about their coverage. "Militants are not happy with us. They are unhappy because the newspapers called them 'terrorists'... they want us to write 'Taliban'," he said. Global watchdog Reporters Without Borders rates Pakistan as one of the most dangerous countries for journalists and says five reporters have been killed this year, although it is unclear if militants or others were responsible. Militant attacks have killed more than 2,700 people since July 2007 and Washington is pressuring Pakistan to do more to crack down on Al-Qaeda and stop insurgents crossing the border to attack Western troops in Afghanistan. Pakistan's military is engaged in multiple offensive across the tribal belt, but government attention is distracted with four cabinet ministers facing legal action after a court annulled an amnesty protecting them from charges. The Supreme Court last week struck down the 2007 National Reconciliation Ordinance, sparking calls for President Asif Ali Zardari to resign and rocking the US-backed government at a time of rising extremist attacks. A court on Tuesday suspended a corruption sentence handed down to Interior Minister Rehman Malik in 2004 and ordered him to pay about 2,400 dollars in bail, an official said. The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) won elections in 2008, marking a long-awaited return to civilian rule, but Zardari's relations with the powerful military are strained and his public approval ratings at rock-bottom. Zardari benefited from the amnesty and the Supreme Court ruling opens the door for his presidential immunity to be challenged.
