Surviving Nepalese twin Jamuna doing well after operation
Channel NewsAsia - Friday, November 28
SINGAPORE: Surviving Nepalese twin Jamuna Shresta is doing well after a major operation at Singapore’s East Shore Hospital on Wednesday.
Jamuna and her sister Ganga were joined at the head when they were born, but the conjoined twins were separated in a major operation seven years ago.
Ganga died in July this year, and Jamuna has many problems due to the abnormal anatomy of her head.
Her brain fluid does not flow down her spinal column normally. Instead, it flows into her spinal cord, causing it to be almost entirely swollen. Muscles and bones were removed in the operation to make space for the flow.
While the operation was a success, Jamuna’s doctor said she may need surgery again if the swelling does not subside. This condition is known as Chiari Malformation.
Dr Keith Goh, consultant neurosurgeon, East Shore Hospital, said: "(We will) open up the spinal cord in the chest area and drain out the area where fluids have accumulated. The nerves and the spinal cord in that area are very thin so she could get paralysed."
Jamuna is 8 years old, but weighs only 20 kg due to her spinal problems. Her psychomotor skills are also affected.
After her spine is fixed, Jamuna will undergo another operation to insert a tissue—engineered skull. She currently has no bone from the ear upwards which leaves her brain very vulnerable.
