ADVERTISEMENT Wu Tianxi was put to death by lethal injection in the city of Nanyang in Henan province on Thursday after the Supreme People's Court rejected an automatic appeal of his death sentence, state media reported. A local court found Wu guilty in December 2007 on seven charges, including raping more than 20 schoolgirls, some as young as 12, the reports said. Wu had ordered associates to abduct the girls from areas near local schools using beatings, threats or enticements, and bring them to his office or hotel rooms, according to the China News Service. The reports said Wu, now 63, covered up his crimes by exercising his influence as a member of the National People's Congress from 1998 to 2003, as well as his title as deputy head of a local legislative advisory body. Wu, who owned a local food processing company, was also found guilty of leading a "black society" gang that ran extortion and other rackets and traded illegally in land use rights. Local officials in many parts of China are believed to have extensive links with organized crime groups that have thrived amid rapid economic growth and relaxed social controls. The national leadership has identified corruption as a key threat, but an opaque political system dominated by the ruling Communist Party _ which brooks no dissent _ and the lack of an independent judiciary contribute to the problem. In separate reports Friday, state media said gang leaders rounded up in the western city of Chongqing in a recent crackdown included members of local legislative bodies who had enjoyed protection from the judiciary and police. A previous deputy director of the city's police force has been detained as part of the investigation, the reports said.
