Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 8
ADVERTISEMENT
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is set to publicly launch Internet Explorer 8 early on Thursday, the latest version of its market-dominating Web browser. The application, an integral part of Microsoft's eagerly awaited Windows 7 operating system, can be downloaded from Microsoft's website from 9 a.m. Pacific time, free for people using licensed Microsoft operating systems.
IBM in talks to buy Sun Microsystems: sources
NEW YORK - IBM <IBM.N> is in talks to buy Sun Microsystems Inc <JAVA.O>, sources with knowledge of the matter said, a move that could bolster the technology giant against rivals in the high-end computer server and software markets. International Business Machines Corp is offering to pay at least $6.5 billion in cash, The Wall Street Journal reported, with the total deal value at about $8 billion, including $1.4 billion of cash on Sun's balance sheet, or $10-$11 per share. That would be more than double Sun's Tuesday's close of $4.97.
Sony Reader taps Google's public domain books
SAN FRANCISCO - Sony Corp <6758.T> is making available public domain books from Google Inc <GOOG.O> to users of its electronic book reader, Sony said on Wednesday, vastly increasing the amount of available content on the device. In the latest round of a budding digital book battle with Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O>, Sony said that more than a half a million classic titles will be free to users of the Reader, which allows consumers to read books and newspapers on a hand-held device.
Nokia to shutter its "Mosh" success story
HELSINKI - To spearhead its push into Internet services, Nokia <NOK1V.HE> put users in charge when it opened in 2007 the networking site Mosh, which lets people post anything they want. Less than two years later the world's top cellphone maker has decided to put an end to "people power", killing a site that attracted a wide audience around the globe, unlike most of Nokia's new fledgling services.
Consumers want unrestricted Internet access: survey
BRUSSELS - Nine in 10 people expect their Internet service providers to offer open and unrestricted access to the Web, a survey showed on Wednesday. The survey, commissioned by Google, Yahoo and Web telephone company Skype, came as the European Parliament and EU states hold talks on a joint deal to reform the bloc's telecoms rules to boost competition. "EU lawmakers should make sure that national authorities have the powers they need to act in cases where traffic management by telecommunication companies constitute unnecessary, discriminatory and/or anti-competitive behavior," the companies said in a joint statement.
Apple unveils App options in iPhone software peek
CUPERTINO, California - Apple <AAPL.O> unveiled new software for the iPhone that will support some long-anticipated features, such as copy-and-paste of text and picture messaging, as the company pushes to stay competitive in the phone market. Apple also gave its vast network of software developers a slew of new options for upcoming applications, such as support for subscription models and automatic alerts, a move applauded by analysts.
Google updates Chrome Web browser to boost speeds
SAN FRANCISCO - Google <GOOG.O> released a new version of its Chrome Web browser on Tuesday, as the search giant continues its efforts to get a foothold in a market dominated by Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>. The new Chrome represents the first major update of the software aimed at the general public since Google entered the browser business six months ago.
Sun Micro takes on Amazon in cloud computing
BOSTON - Computer maker Sun Microsystems Inc <JAVA.O> is preparing to take on Web retailer Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> in the fledgling market for "cloud" computing services that can be accessed via the Internet. Sun, which sells high-end business computers, will lease the use of servers and data storage space to developers who can access those resources over the Web.
Marvel, startup ink online gaming deal
NEW YORK - Marvel Entertainment and Gazillion Entertainment have struck a licensing deal to develop massively multiplayer online games based on Marvel characters. The first game in development is a casual MMO title for younger audiences based on Marvel's "Super Hero Squad" property.
Group asks U.S. FTC to probe Google privacy safety
SAN FRANCISCO - An online privacy group called on Tuesday for government regulators to investigate the adequacy of Google Inc's <GOOG.O> security safeguards after the company inadvertently released consumers' private information this month. In a complaint filed with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday, the Electronic Privacy Information Center faults Google's practices relating to its so-called cloud computing services, which store user-generated documents and other personal information on Google servers instead of on an individual's personal computer.
