The U.N. released a statement saying Gbagbo was alive and in good health, and will be brought to justice. Gbagbo’s refusal to accept his loss during the presidential election to Alassane Ouattara last year spiraled the West African nation into civil war. He was arrested in order to put a stop to the violence and killings, reported the United Nations. It was not immediately determined who captured Gbagbo. Reports stated Gbagbo was seized by Ouattara’s loyal forces. Ouattara is recognized internationally as the rightful president of Ivory Coast. But reports from Gbagbo’s camp stated he was captured by French forces who stormed his residence. Gbagbo was taken to the Golf Hotel, where both the U.N. and Ouattara are headquartered. Forces loyal to both men – both claiming to be president – had clashed in Abidjan, the country’s main city overnight. U.N. troops did not get involved. Gbagbo lost the presidential election in November, but refused to leave office. The two sides have been fighting for control of Abidjan for weeks. On Sunday, the United Nations fired on Gbagbo forces after troops from his camp attacked the hotel where the United Nations and Ouattara are headquartered. Along with the French military, they targeted key positions of Gbagbo’s fighters. The violence between Gbagbo and Ouattara started after the presidential election last year, turning into a full-on war between the two camps in Abidjan.
