Paris Hilton won't owe $8.3 million for film flop
ADVERTISEMENT
MIAMI - Celebrity heiress Paris Hilton will not have to pay $8.3 million in damages claimed by the receiver for a defunct entertainment firm who said she failed to promote a movie flop called "Pledge This!" But the decision by U.S. District Judge Federico Moreno on Monday left open the possibility the receiver might be able to claw back part of a $1 million fee paid to Hilton for the 2006 National Lampoon movie.
Michael Jackson burial set for August 29
LOS ANGELES burial will be held at Glendale Forest Lawn Memorial Park, in a suburb of Los Angeles, a family spokesman said in a statement.
Sean and Robin Penn back to divorce court
LOS ANGELES - Oscar winning actor Sean Penn and his wife Robin's rocky marriage is headed for divorce for the third time, and this time it's Robin who has filed the court papers. The "Message in a Bottle" actress, 43, filed for divorce last week in northern California where they reside citing irreconcilable differences, People magazine said on Tuesday.
"Twilight" hits the road with fan convention tour
LOS ANGELES - Tween vampire lovers could soon be descending on a city near you. Summit Entertainment, producer of the "Twilight" movies, has partnered with Creation Entertainment to produce a series of "Twilight" fan conventions, which will take place at various North American locations over the next three years.
Tom Ford's "Single Man" vies for Queer Lion
ROME - "A Single Man," the directorial debut of fashion designer Tom Ford, will head a record 14 films in the third edition of the Queer Lion awards at the Venice Film Festival. The Queer Lion prize selects the best film with a gay plot or subplot screening at the festival or in one of its sidebars. Ford's story of an academic struggling with the loss of his partner is the only Queer Lion candidate that's also in the main 24-film lineup.
Stephen Stills mines archives for two new releases
DETROIT - As he continues to work on his own boxed set retrospective, Stephen Stills has mined past recordings for a pair of fall archival releases. On September 22 the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist will release "Manassas -- Pieces," a 15-song collection of outtakes and rarities -- "The bits and pieces we were silly enough to leave off," Stills writes in the liner notes. Manassas, the country rock band he formed in 1971 with Chris Hillman, of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, released two albums: a self-titled two-disc set in 1972 and "Down the Road" in 1973.
Diane Kruger tailor-made for Tarantino film
LOS ANGELES - When filmmaker Quentin Tarantino was looking for a German actress to play a 1940s German screen siren-turned-spy in his movie "Inglourious Basterds," Diane Kruger knew she was perfect for the part. After all, she thought, who better to play a German movie star working in France than a German actress like herself who was living in France?
U.S. skating champ Boitano serves up cooking show
NEW YORK - Figure skater Brian Boitano always dreamed of opening his own restaurant even while on a strict diet of salads and potatoes when he was competing. Boitano still doesn't own a restaurant, but thousands will watch him cook in his forthcoming television show, "What Would Brian Boitano Make?".
Oliver Stone to show "Secret History of America"
LOS ANGELES - Film director Oliver Stone has a secret -- 10, at least -- and he is about to tell some them in a new documentary for U.S. cable television. Stone, whose films such as "Nixon" have focused on controversial people and events, is now shooting the 10-part nonfiction series about unknown moments in U.S. history for the Showtime cable network called "Oliver Stone's Secret History of America," set to debut in 2010.
"Rock Band" unveils 19 songs for new Beatles game
NEW YORK - A list of 19 songs by The Beatles including classics "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "A Hard Day's Night" for a new "Rock Band" video game were revealed on Tuesday, leaving only one mystery title remaining. Other new tunes include "Ticket to Ride," "Helter Skelter," "If I Needed Someone" and "Drive My Car," bringing to 45 the number of titles unveiled so far by MTV Games and Harmonix, which developed the "Rock Band" series that lets fans play plastic guitars or drums along with music on TV screens.
