Both candidates polled 39 percent in the Ibope survey commissioned by the Trade Association of Sao Paulo. A previous Ibope survey published on June 23 put Rousseff ahead with 40 percent over former Sao Paulo governor Serra with 35 percent. The poll, published in O Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper, added confirmation to a separate poll by researcher Datafolha on Friday that the two were now tied. It said Serra had 39 percent of voter intentions, and Rousseff 38 percent but a 2 percent margin of error meant they were statistically tied. A series of television and radio advertisements promoting Serra's candidacy and highlighting achievements during his term as Sao Paulo governor, has helped raise his profile. Former environment minister and Green Party candidate Marina Silva registered 10 percent of voter intentions in the Ibope poll for the elections set for October 3. Previous presidential election years in Brazil have unnerved markets in Latin America's largest economy but neither of the two candidates is seen straying far from the disciplined economic management credited for bringing about the current boom. Serra chose Indio da Costa, a 39-year-old congressman from Rio de Janeiro, as his presidential running mate last week, a choice his campaign hopes will raise his appeal among younger voters.
