Not enough Facebook friends? Buy them

SYDNEY said it was targeting social networking sites because of their huge advertising potential.
PluggedIn: Embracing social media, photo sites stay in the game
BANGALORE - Someday the Kodak moment may be called the "Facebook" or "Twitpic" moment, but old-school photo management services are fighting to stay in the picture. People have been flocking to popular social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace to share images with friends and family, ditching sites like Flickr, Snapfish, Photobucket, Shutterfly Inc <SFLY.O> and Picasa.
Nokia seeking developers' help in Apple rivalry
STUTTGART - Nokia Oyj <NOK1V.HE> said on Thursday it would start to open its software platforms to external developers in a bid to boost the quantity and quality of software for Nokia phones. "We are putting a relatively big part of our future into the hands of third-party developers because this is the only way we can be relevant to consumers," Niklas Savander, the head of Nokia's mobile Internet services unit, said at the annual "Nokia World" event in Stuttgart.
YouTube may stream movie rentals
NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Online video site YouTube is in talks with several major movie studios about renting movies to users by streaming the movies over the Internet according to a person familiar with the talks on Wednesday. It would mark the first time the world's most popular video site would charge its users to watch videos.
Viewers hunger for Web and TV at same time: study
LOS ANGELES - U.S. television viewers are increasingly turning on the Web, tuning into television and not missing a beat on either, as simultaneous TV and Internet use continues to rise, research firm Nielsen said on Wednesday. Nielsen said in a report that 57 percent of TV viewers in the U.S. who have Internet access use both mediums at the same time at least once a month. That translates to more than 128 million U.S. consumers.
LG to unveil new Windows smartphones
SEOUL - LG Electronics Inc <066570.KS>, the world's third-largest mobile phone maker, said on Thursday it would launch three new smartphones in the next few weeks that run on Windows software. They will be the first LG phones to feature the new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system from Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>, which LG said should make it easier for users to navigate the Web.
Sprint backs Hero, the latest HTC Android phone
NEW YORK - Sprint Nextel Corp <S.N> plans to sell HTC Corp's <2498.TW> Hero cell phone based on Google Inc's <GOOG.O> Android operating system, intensifying competition in the crowded U.S. smartphone market dominated by Apple Inc's iPhone. Sprint, which already sells Palm Inc's <PALM.O> Pre smartphone, said on Thursday it will start selling Hero on October 11 for $179.99 before tax and after $150 of rebates for customers who sign a two year contract.
"Digi-novel" combines book, movie and website
NEW YORK - Is it a book? Is it a movie? Is it a website?Actually it's all three. Anthony Zuiker, creator of the "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" U.S. television series, is releasing what he calls a "digi-novel" combining all three media -- and giving a jolt to traditional book publishing. Zuiker has created "Level 26," a crime novel that also invites readers to log on to a website about every 20 pages using a special code to watch a "cyber-bridge" -- a three-minute film clip tied to the story.
Google outage setback for business email pitch
BOSTON - Google Inc's <GOOG.O> efforts to persuade businesses to buy its email services suffered a setback this week after a highly publicized outage shut down accounts of millions of corporate customers for almost two hours. The outage -- one of several in the past year -- underscored fears that Google's email, still lagging Yahoo Inc's <YHOO.O> in market share -- is not stable or reliable enough for corporate users.
Twitter snags former Google exec for COO
SAN FRANCISCO - Microblogging service Twitter has tapped a former Google Inc <GOOG.O> executive to be its chief operating officer, the latest move by the fledgling but fast-growing company to build out its management team as it seeks to start making money. Dick Costolo will join Twitter next week as COO, company spokeswoman Jenna Sampson said by email.
