Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Lebanon unannounced on Sunday and assured her country's continued support to the Lebanese government under President Michel Sleiman.
Clinton also called for a free and fair elections upon her arriving in Beirut for the first time. The Middle Easter country is preparing for parliamentary elections in June with the militant, Syria-backed Hezbollah group vying for control of the legislature.
"The people of Lebanon must be able to choose their own representatives in open and fair elections, without the specter of violence or intimidation, and free of outside interference," Clinton said, according to CNN.
Clinton also said that U.S. President Barack Obama and herself "are committed to supporting President Sleiman's efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous, sovereign and democratic Lebanon."
Part of Clinton's itinerary are a meeting with Sleiman and the laying of a wreath at the tomb of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005.
