Facebook plans to give developers more access: source
SAN FRANCISCO - Internet social media company Facebook plans to allow outside developers access to core parts of the website so they can build new services, a person familiar with the situation said. The person said the company is expected to announce the plans on Monday. The new capabilities would let third-party developers build services that access content uploaded by Facebook users such as pictures and videos with the users' permission.
Qualcomm to pay Broadcom $891 million to settle litigation
NEW YORK - Wireless chip supplier Qualcomm Inc <QCOM.O> agreed to pay smaller rival Broadcom Corp <BRCM.O> $891 million over four years to settle long-standing and increasingly bitter legal battles over technology patents. Qualcomm, which has lost several key battles in patent infringement cases with Irvine, California based Broadcom in the last few years, said on Sunday it would make its first payment of $200 million to Broadcom in the current quarter.
Conficker virus begins to attack PCs: experts
BOSTON - A malicious software program known as Conficker that many feared would wreak havoc on April 1 is slowly being activated, weeks after being dismissed as a false alarm, security experts said. Conficker, also known as Downadup or Kido, is quietly turning thousands of personal computers into servers of e-mail spam and installing spyware, they said.
Microsoft still sees potential in Yahoo partnership
COLOGNE, Germany - U.S. software company Microsoft still sees value in a potential partnership with Yahoo even though it is no longer wants to buy it, chief executive Steve Ballmer said on Friday. "I have said many times that we no longer are interested in acquiring Yahoo, but we'd see the potential to create real value by partnering with Yahoo," he said at an industry event in Germany.
Facebook surfing while sick costs Swiss woman job
ZURICH - A Swiss insurance worker lost her job after surfing popular social network site Facebook while off sick, her employer said on Friday. The woman said she could not work in front of a computer as she needed to lie in the dark but was then seen to be active on Facebook, which insurer Nationale Suisse said in a statement had destroyed its trust in the employee.

Friends told her she could make lots of money just by advertising there. "I would never walk the streets. I would never do that kind of thing. But it's pretty easy to put an ad up. We love Craigslist," said Marissa, who declined to be identified by her full name because of her illegal work.
DVD software backups challenged in U.S. court
SAN FRANCISCO - Hollywood movie companies told a federal judge on Friday that RealNetworks <RNWK.O> violated copyright law by selling software that allows people to make backups of their DVDs on a home computer. U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel convened the first-day arguments by the movie companies and the DVD Copy Control Association that "RealDVD" software should be banned.
IBM plans cloud computing services for 2009
BOSTON - IBM <IBM.N> plans to launch several cloud computing services this year, taking on companies such as Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O>, Google Inc <GOOG.O>, Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> and Salesforce.com Inc <CRM.N>. International Business Machines Corp spokeswoman Kelly Sims said on Thursday the first of these new services will enable developers to write software that works with the emerging, Web-based technology.
Microsoft cuts costs, says Windows 7 on track
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp's quarterly profit fell 32 percent, but its shares rose as investors welcomed continuing efforts to cut costs and news that the release of its Windows 7 operating system is on track. The world's top software maker offered no profit forecast on Thursday, after withdrawing its outlook in January, but did say it expected the personal computer, server and hardware markets to remain weak for at least another quarter.
