Hollywood's eyes focus on Golden Globe Awards
BEVERLY HILLS, California - Hollywood on Sunday geared up for one of its biggest parties of the year, the Golden Globe Awards, with "The King's Speech" and "The Social Network" in a close race for the top honor, best film drama. "The King's Speech" heads into the glitzy awards ceremony as the most nominated movie with seven nods overall, including best drama. It faces stiff competition from critics' darling "The Social Network," the Facebook film that has swept many early honors in Hollywood's awards season and comes into the Golden Globes with six nominations.
"Green Hornet" flies high at box office
LOS ANGELES - "The Green Hornet" flew into the top spot at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday despite bad critical buzz for the 3-D superhero comic-book adaptation. The picture sold about $34 million worth of tickets during the three days beginning Friday, said its distributor, Columbia Pictures. The opening was in line with expectations and it ranks as the third-best start for a new release in January, according to the Sony Corp unit.
Zsa Zsa Gabor smiling after surgery: husband
LOS ANGELES - Zsa Zsa Gabor smiled and ate ice cream on Saturday, a day after doctors amputated much of the actress' leg to fight a gangrene infection that could have killed her, her husband said. "She talks to me and she smiles a little bit," Frederic Prinz von Anhalt, told Reuters.
Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska crowned Miss America
LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Nebraska's 17-year-old Teresa Scanlan was named Miss America Saturday becoming the youngest winner ever in the pageant's history after a night of being judged for poise, talent, fitness and knowledge. Scanlan wowed the judges wearing a stunning white evening gown and tickling the ivories on piano with rousing rendition of "White Water Chopped Sticks" in the talent competition.
Actress Susannah York dies aged 72: report
LONDON - British actress Susannah York, one of the most memorable film faces of the 1960s, has died from cancer aged 72, British media reported late on Saturday. York was best known for her role opposite Jane Fonda in the 1969 film "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" for which she was nominated for an Oscar.
Broadcast critics click on "Social Network"
LOS ANGELES - Facebook film "The Social Network" became a big friend of broadcast critics on Friday when it won several top Critics' Choice Awards, including best film, in the race toward Hollywood's Oscars. The movie, which traces the history of the popular website from its founding in a college dormitory to its first million users, also earned a best director trophy for David Fincher and adapted screenplay for writer Aaron Sorkin, among others.
Steven Tyler talks "American Idol"
NEW YORK - No one would have faulted Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler for hanging up his colorful scarves and taking a nice long vacation earlier this year. After all, he'd recently completed rehab, finished a lengthy tour, and mended fences with his bandmates following a 2009 war of the words. Instead, Tyler signed up to be a judge on "American Idol," a show better-known for melisma and makeovers than hard rock. Despite questions about how the motley crew of Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson would breathe new life into the show, Tyler says he's having a great time as a judge and convinced he'll discover the next music legend.
CBS concerned about Charlie Sheen but show goes on
LOS ANGELES - CBS television said on Friday it was highly concerned about the personal life of "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen but gave no indication it planned to yank the top-rated U.S. comedy off the air. "We have a high level of concern. How could we not?", CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler told television journalists, responding to questions about persistent reports of drinking and partying by Sheen.
Pair arrested in false claim against actor Gary Busey
LOS ANGELES - Call them amateur paparazzi. A picture happy couple tried unsuccessfully to catch actor Gary Busey on camera in the wrong place at the wrong time, but police arrested the pair instead. Mark Abel, 52, and Patrice Karst, 51, on Thursday flagged down officers in the celebrity-filled community of Malibu, California, to report they had seen Busey driving his car "erratically" and appeared drunk, said the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.
Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg teaming on "Dad" film
LOS ANGELES - Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg are in talks with Columbia Pictures to star in "I Hate You Dad," a comedy that Sandler's Happy Madison banner is producing. The story centers on a father who moves in on the eve of his son's wedding and promptly begins feuding with the bride-to-be.
