The kiwi had benefited from solid investor appetite for risky positions, such as high yield currencies and stocks, but it was dented as data showed New Zealand's current account deficit had not narrowed as much as expected. "It wasn't as good as expected and we saw a sell off to around $0.7040, which probably wasn't justified since much of the wider deficit was because of better company profits, which means the economy must be improving," said Westpac senior market strategist Imre Speizer. The kiwi <NZD=D4> was trading around $0.7038/42 at 0400 GMT compared with $0.7060/64 late in local trade on Tuesday. It traded in a tight range of $0.7044-0.7063. "The data wasn't bad in a macro sense, but markets look at things in a much shorter horizon, they look at what was expected and what you got and that was all that mattered," Speizer said. As expected New Zealand's current account narrowed to its lowest in eight years in the fourth quarter, falling to 2.9 percent of gross domestic product from a revised 3.2 percent in the third quarter, but the market had been expecting a 1.9 percent figure. The smaller deficit fell short in part because foreign investors earned more from their New Zealand assets, and a scaling back of the amount paid by banks after losing a tax case. "Slim as it is, the current account deficit will face renewed upward pressure from this point as the recessionary forces that have dictated its diet, loosen the girdle again post-rehab," said BNZ senior economist Craig Ebert. The data was also seen reducing the chances of any upside surprises in Thursday's fourth-quarter gross domestic product data, where there are expectations for a rise of 0.8 percent. [NZ/POLL] The kiwi was seen following broader market direction ahead of the GDP data. The euro <EUR=> fell to an all-time low against the Swiss franc, and came close to a 10-month dip against the U.S. dollar as investors wondered if euro zone leaders will agree a rescue package for debt-stricken Greece at a two day summit starting on Thursday. The NZ dollar-euro cross rate <NZDEUR=R> was little changed, with the kiwi still in sight of two-year highs set last week. New Zealand government debt was a touch softer with the yield on the benchmark 10-year bond <NZ10YT=RR> two basis points higher at 5.92 percent.
