ADVERTISEMENT The students from a cadet college were held up at gunpoint in the northwest province where Pakistan has pressed a blistering air and ground assault against the Taliban, on the border with a restive tribal area neighbouring Afghanistan. They were being bussed to the town of Bannu after the college closed for its summer vacation, Bannu town police chief Iqbal Marwat told AFP. "Only two buses carrying some 25 students reached Bannu," Marwat said, adding that about 28 buses carrying around 400 students were missing. "They have been kidnapped by Taliban militants," Marwat told AFP. The college is an army-run educational institution for civilians. Those kidnapped include students and civilian staff, he said. Local officials near the college in Razmak said the students are aged between 15 and 25 years and were not training for the army, but were following a secular curriculum. Javed Alam, vice principal of the college said the vehicles were carrying more than 300 students and some 30 staff members and employees of the college when they were stopped at Bakka Khel town near Bannu. "Militants started firing in the air to stop the vehicles and then they forcibly drove them to unknown place," Alam told a private television channel. Unconfirmed reports later emerged that most of the students managed to reach safety and that only around 24 staff and students remained missing. "We were in a convoy of around 30 vehicles, escorted by tribal police, when masked men stopped our vehicles and started asking questions," Mohammad Shafiq, a ninth grade student, told AFP. "They asked us whether we are army recruits, first they were questioning us in Urdu and then in Pashto," he said. "They stopped us for some time but allowed most of those students who were from the tribal areas to go," Shah Hussain, another student in the same class said. "Some of the vehicles left behind did not accompany us and we do not know about them" he said. The abductions fuelled already growing fears of revenge attacks for Pakistan's determined offensive, which analysts said has put the Taliban on the defensive and forced them to seek civilian targets. More than 80 people have been killed in bombings since the operation was launched on April 26, including two people killed in a car bomb in the garrison town of Kohat, also in northwest Pakistan, on Monday. The military campaign is now in its sixth week since Taliban fighters advanced to within 100 kilometres (60 miles) of Islamabad, flouting a deal to put three million people under sharia law in exchange for peace. The United States, which has strongly backed the latest offensive, says Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants have carved out safe havens from swathes of northwest Pakistan, where they are plotting attacks on the West. The military last week declared Mingora, the main town in Swat, back under government control but aid workers and witnesses have described desperation in the city, where food and water are scarce, and electricity limited. "Only a few shops are open, we are facing a severe shortage of food," Mohammad Usman, an elderly man told AFP from Mingora. Analysts warn that authorities must rapidly restore basic services after the guns fall silent to stop the Taliban from exploiting frustrations and poverty to re-fuel the insurgency, as has happened after previous military operations. Fears over suffering in the conflict zone are growing as Red Cross officials who visited Swat said they were "gravely concerned" with the problems of running water, food, electricity and lack of medical care. Pakistan has not released civilian casualty statistics for the offensive, saying only that more than 1,200 militants and around 90 soldiers have died. UN officials say around 2.4 million people have fled the fighting, in what rights groups call the largest internal displacement in more than half a century.
