Rep. Grayson Again Grabs Headlines With 'K Street Whore' Comment
October 27, 2009 3:08 p.m. EST
Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor
Washington, D.C. (AHN) - A congressman known for his combative style is under fire for calling a female adviser to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke a "K Street whore" during an radio interview last month that was re-released this week by Republicans. The Democrat a few weeks back caused a stir when he described the GOP's healthcare plan as "don't get sick, and if you do get sick, die quickly."
"Here I am, the only member of Congress who actually worked as an economist, and this lobbyist, this K Street whore, is trying to teach me about economics," Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) had said on the Alex Jones radio show, referring to the work of Linda Robertson as a former Enron lobbyist.
The comment, posted on Red State on Monday, was received with a statement from Grayson's little-known GOP rival, Armando Gutierrez, who is seeking to keep the Democrat from winning a second term next year.
"I am embarrassed that he represents the good people of Central Florida," Gutierrez said in a statement released by the National Republican Congressional Committee. "These are serious times. Alan Grayson has shown us once again that he is unfit to lead."
Tallahassee-Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer also said, "You'd like to believe that our representatives take their jobs seriously and act with both integrity and honor-there is neither integrity nor honor in Grayson's remarks or in his actions. I am appalled and embarrassed that he misrepresents his constituents this way, and I can tell you, the people of Florida will not soon forget his words."
But Grayson told POLITICO through a spokesman he was commenting on Robertson's "professional career, not her personal life." "She had the audacity to attack a congressman who used to be an economist. She's a career lobbyist who used to work for Enron and advocates for whatever she gets paid to promote," spokesman Todd Jurkowski added.
Grayson, a 51-year-old Harvard Law School who defeated a four-term Republican incumbent last November, first gained nationwide attention in January after his staff posted video of him on YouTube lecturing Federal Reserve Board of Governor's Vice Chair Donald Kohn during a committee hearing on the government's $700 billion financial bailout program approved by Congress under the Bush administration.
The congressman quickly followed this up with a statement about conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh, who was under fire at the time for saying in his radio show that he wanted President Barack Obama to fail.
"Rush Limbaugh is a has-been hypocrite loser, who craves attention. His right-wing lunacy sounds like Mikhail Gorbachev, extolling the virtues of communism. Limbaugh actually was more lucid when he was a drug addict. If America ever did 1% of what he wanted us to do, then we'd all need pain killers," Grayson had said.
In September, Grayson in a floor speech described Republican healthcare proposals as "to die quickly if you get sick." Republicans had demanded an apology from him, but the congressman had responded by apologizing to those who he said had died because of lack of health coverage, which he called a "holocaust in America," prompting criticisms from the Anti-Defamation League.
