ADVERTISEMENT Obama woke beneath towering snow-topped peaks at a Montana ski resort, then helicoptered into the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, to watch the "Old Faithful" geyser spew water and boiling steam into the sky. But then, it was back to business, and another town hall meeting, in Colorado, designed to turn back a torrent of Republican attacks on his top domestic priority during Congress's unusually incendiary August summer break. "Today, we're talking about people ... who have insurance but are still stuck with huge bills because theyve hit a cap on their benefits or they are charged exorbitant out-of-pocket fees," Obama told a 1,600 strong crowd here. It was the latest rebuke by Obama to the insurance firms that make up the private side of the US health care system, a day after he accused the companies of holding sick Americans hostage. In his weekly radio address on Saturday, Obama vowed that despite the vociferous campaign whipped up by health care reform critics, he would bring medical coverage in reach of all Americans, at a time when some 46 million Americans have no health care insurance whatsoever. "If you don't have insurance, you'll finally be able to afford insurance," the president said. "Everyone will have the security and stability that's missing today." On Friday, Obama told around 1,300 people at an event in a Montana airport hanger that television networks were fanning opposition to his plan by looping footage of lawmakers's angry confrontations with voters. "TV loves a ruckus," said Obama but argued that away from television's glare, people were holding "civil, honest" conversations about change Earlier, swapping political hot water for the real thing, Obama and his family toured the famed "Old Faithful" geyser in Yellowstone National Park. "Oh, that's pretty good -- Cool," Obama was heard to say to wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha, as the geothermal natural wonder spurted thousands of gallons of boiling water and steam into the air. Late on Friday, the president tried a spot of fly fishing for trout, while his family braved frequent heavy downpours to take a thrilling whitewater raft ride in the shadow of Montana's craggy peaks. On Sunday, the first family was set for another day of adventure tourism with a trip to the Grand Canyon during a visit to Arizona. Obama tied the political posturing over health care reform in with his wilderness tour on Friday, with a quip at his town hall event in an airport hangar in Montana. "You have bear, moose and elk ... in Washington you have mostly bull!" He also denied claims that he is attempting to introduce a "socialized" system like the national health services in Canada and Britain, following dire portraits painted by his rivals of state-run medicine in those two countries. Obama aides are confident he will still be able to drive reform through when Congress returns in September and escape damage to his political capital or sweeping "change" agenda. As the president steps up his counter-attack, a coalition of pro-reform groups are belatedly blitzing airwaves with a 12-million dollar spending spree of advertisements supporting the overhaul. Critics cite fears about the level of government intervention Obama has prescribed in the finance and industrial sectors to counter the deepest economic crisis since the 1930s. Republicans argue that "Obamacare" would be too expensive, swell the ballooning deficit, worsen the quality of care now offered by the private system and strangle the industry with government bureaucracy. Obama is yet to reveal a detailed plan, but promises to expand coverage, control spiraling healthcare costs, rein in insurance companies and prioritize preventative care. Democrats are also debating whether to introduce a government entity to compete with private health care providers.
