A magnitude 7 quake can trigger a tsunami but there were no immediate warnings triggered. The quake, relatively shallow at a depth of 44.7 miles, struck at 12:19 a.m. local time on Wednesday (1429 GMT on Tuesday), 126 miles southeast of Rabaul on New Britain.
