Gunmen in Mexico kill 3 with U.S. consulate ties

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico
Sun Mar 14, 2010 2:20pm EDT
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (Reuters) - Three people connected to the U.S. consulate in Mexico's most violent border city were murdered, police said on Sunday, prompting U.S. President Barack Obama to respond with outrage and sadness.
World | Barack Obama | Mexico
Gunmen on Saturday killed an American couple associated with the consulate in Ciudad Juarez, just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, in broad daylight, a police source told Reuters.
The couple's baby survived the attack, the source said.
Minutes later, another man with ties to the consulate was murdered in a different area of the city at the center of a bloody turf war between drug cartels, according to the source.
Gunmen boxed in the third victim's car with other vehicles and shot him, according to a media witness who saw the crime scene in the city where 8,000 troops and federal police have been deployed.
A consulate employee and her husband, both U.S. citizens, along with the husband of another employee who is a Mexican citizen, were murdered, the White House said in a statement.
"The president is deeply saddened and outraged by the news," White House National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said in a statement, adding that Obama "shares in the outrage of the Mexican people at the murders of thousands in Ciudad Juarez and elsewhere in Mexico."
In an apparent reaction to the attacks, the U.S. State Department on Sunday updated its warning on travel in Mexico to say that it had authorized the departure of dependents of U.S. government personnel from U.S. consulates in several northern Mexico border cities.
In Ciudad Juarez, one of the world's deadliest cities, there are as many as a dozen drug murders a day and scenes of bullet-riddled vehicles and bodies lying in pools of blood are common.
Mexico's drug war has killed some 18,600 people, mainly cartel members and police officers, since President Felipe Calderon took power and launched an army crackdown on traffickers in late 2006. The rampant violence worries Washington and foreign investors.
Hammer said the United States would work with Calderon's government "to break the power" of drug trafficking organizations.
The consulate in Ciudad Juarez and U.S. Embassy in Mexico City could not immediately provide more details.

What a brilliant mind to twist a murder in Mexico into a racist comment on the health care debate. So typical of the sophmoric logic used by right wing Cheneyesqe tea bag nation.

Hey! “BHOShatOnUS” Nice abusive nickname! Bush did S__t on the US. And as usual, as a conservative, you have your information incorrect and don’t know what you are talking about. Most Mexicans on this side of the border as well as the other are not murderers. The President is also not the only person in the Federal government, but as a wing-nut, you have conveniently forgotten that piece of factual information….by the way, it’s not Obamas health plan. Congress is to blame!

BHOShatOnUs please consider being less of a dumbass. Could you hijack the topic any further from the point of the article?
You associate giving free healthcare to illegal immigrants (which is not in the health care bill you might note- and you are assuming those immigrants are all Mexican) to giving it to the Murderers in this story. That’s a downright offensive statement buddy. Calling all Illegal Immigrants murderers. Look pal, you probably ate a burrito for lunch the other day and therefore you are supporting the murderers. Ridiculous. Get a life and stop blaming Obama for your own damn problems you pig.

The only way to stop the violence is to put the cartels out of business. The only way to do that is to end the insanity of the drug laws and legalize the stuff.
Yes, there will still be drug problem, and a big one. But one that can be attacked with something other than guns, can have solutions other than locking people up for absurd lengths of time in prison, and which can pay for its own solutions from taxes on the products.
Too simple I’m sure.

Shat-On, you think Mexican drug traffickers are going to be incentivized to come to America for free health care? I’m sure their cartels offer full coverage.
As for them being rewarded for breaking our laws, I think that you have it a little backwards. These guys are rewarded by AMERICANS like you and me breaking our own laws and creating a huge demand for the drugs these dudes provide.
In fact, these drug traffickers seem just your type: hard working Mexicans who stay in Mexico, not sucking off the teat of hard working Americans like yourself. They probably even cook the meth that you smoke!

Far away, it is liberals buying drugs from Mexico.
How do you know the Mexicans here illegally aren’t murderers or criminals of all sorts, since they don’t get vetted before coming here?
The racist mind is the one that would purposely pit the illegal immigrants, under the banner of Hispanics, against Americans, under the banner of Whites, for political gain. Obama is a race consumed Marxist punk pitting one of his other unfavored races against the whites for the benefit of his favored race.
It is Obama’s health plan. The other Democrat Obama buttlickers do what ever the Marxist punk Obama says out of fear they’ll be tagged racist. Plus the current Democrat leadership is just weak-minded and as un-American as that Nidal Hasan fellow.
If I wanted meth, I could make my own. Despite government school education, I managed to understand chemistry okay. It is dumbbutt liberal drug abusing Democrats that have to outsource their chemicals of dependency manufacturing. I can’t tell you how many dopey liberals in this area have burned down their homes, burned up themselves, and put their families at grave risk over their liberalism-inspired drug habits and failed application of chemistry beyond their intelligence. Are liberals dumb because they use drugs, or do they use drugs because they are dumb? I suspect both.
If a Mexican wants to run from Mexican law enforcement, should that ever be necessary in that corrupt country, they can come here and fit right in with the Democrat party ranks. Most criminals are Democrats, 10:1, after all. We can’t build prisons fast enough to house them all and we can no longer afford to keep them under lock and key. The criminal Democrat is the fastest growing minority in the country.

It seems illegals already get free medical, and jobs, here. How is including Americans in health care formula going to encourage more illegal aliens? And we should heavily crack down (no pun intended) on drugs here to cut demand.
