Drug tests awaited on Brittany Murphy death
LOS ANGELES - An autopsy on the body of actress Brittany Murphy was completed on Monday, but authorities said the exact cause of death will not be known until toxicology tests are finished in four to six weeks. As speculation mounted that prescription drugs or anorexia may have played a part in Murphy's death at age 32, the Los Angeles coroner's office said there were no signs of trauma. Police said no foul play was suspected.
"Avatar" could get nine Oscar nominations
LOS ANGELES - Since June, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences opened the best picture race to 10 nominees, Oscar has been waiting for a knight in shining box office armor -- preferably a "Dark Knight": a commercial powerhouse with strong critical credentials. A large part of the rationale for opting for an Oscar Top 10 was the hope that Academy voters would embrace mainstream hits, thereby expanding the potential audience for the broadcast while avoiding the cries of protest from jilted fanboys who felt robbed when "The Dark Knight" failed to earn a best picture nomination last time around.
Foreign filmmakers get creative with small budgets
LOS ANGELES - In 1911, Dadasaheb Phalke was an unemployed printer and part-time magician trying to make his way in Bombay. Phalke's life took an unexpected turn when he stumbled into a tent for a screening of the silent movie "The Life of Christ." Instantly mesmerized by the new medium, Phalke decided he wanted to make films specifically for the Indian audience. But like so many directors before and after him, Phalke had problems financing his first film. The father of two young children sold virtually all his household possessions to pay for his project. The film got made, Phalke became an instant success, and Bollywood was born.
Director Singer shares "X-Men," holiday plans
LOS ANGELES - Director Bryan Singer some shockwaves through the geek community last week when he revealed he was returning to Fox's "X-Men" franchise, five years after he angered the studio by opting to make "Superman Returns" at Warner Bros. Singer, who shot the first two "X-Men" installments, will develop and direct "X-Men: First Class." The prequel to the "X-Men" movies will look at the teenage years of the super-powered mutant heroes.

New movie trailers could boost Oscar ratings
LOS ANGELES - If there's one thing the producers of the Academy Awards should have learned from the 2009 telecast, it's that Hollywood loves a hit. Initial reviews of the Hugh Jackman-hosted extravaganza were mixed. And the feeling inside the Governors Ball that night was that the show's new pieces of flair -- "innovations" such as carting out former acting winners to hand out awkward praise to nominees they likely didn't care much about -- merely added a lighter shade of rouge to the aging starlet.
U.S. court urges misconduct probe into Polanski case
LOS ANGELES - A California appeals court on Monday denied a bid to dismiss a 32-year-old unlawful sex charge against director Roman Polanski but urged prosecutors to investigate claims of misconduct in the handling of the case. Polanski remains under house arrest in Switzerland, facing extradition to the United States where he could be sentenced for pleading guilty to sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.
Britney Spears stories; some absurd
LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears hit back at the gossips on Monday, publishing a list of the top 75 most ridiculous or offensive stories written about her in 2009 -- including one claiming her family was once so poor they ate squirrels. The list culled mostly from U.S. and British websites, celebrity magazines and newspapers, included various reports of new boyfriends, claims of emotional breakdown on her Australian tour, allegations she was being drugged by her father and supposed demands for stripper poles in her hotel room.
Poehler, Applegate squeak for laughs in "Chipmunks"
LOS ANGELES - Two years ago, a big screen adaptation of "Alvin and Chipmunks" became a surprise hit at box offices grossing $360 million worldwide. The movie was based on the animated music group created in 1958 about three singing chipmunks and their exasperated manager/father. This week, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" hits theaters with a new, all-female singing group, The Chipettes, who give Alvin, Simon and Theodore a run for their money.
"Avatar" debut box office raised to $77 million
LOS ANGELES - Director James Cameron's new movie "Avatar," considered one of the most expensive movies ever made, on Monday saw its initial weekend ticket sales raised to $77 million in the United States and Canada. The movie's box office performance has been widely watched given its cost. Sunday's initial estimates showed ticket sales at $73 million in the U.S. and Canada and $159 million elsewhere for global ticket sales of $232 million.
