Source: (AHN) Reporter: Abdi Hajji Hussein Location: Mogadishu, Somalia Published: October 12, 2011 11:32 am EDT Topics: Unrest, Conflicts And War, Armed Conflict, Weather, Report, Weather News, Disaster And Accident, Famine Famine-displaced Somalis in Mogadishu’s makeshift camps are facing appalling living conditions after torrential rains Tuesday night poured into parts of the country’s south, including the capital. “My children and I didn’t sleep entirely because heavy rains started to pour at the night as our makeshift settlement, which is made of old clothes, cartons and pieces of plastics, can’t afford to protect us from the drops of pouring rains with heavy winds,” Asha Ahmed, a mother of four, told All Headline News as she sat in front of her precarious shelter. “The rains were long-awaited but added misery and affliction to our previously poor standard living conditions,” Ahmed said as she used a hand to cover the mouth of her coughing 3-month-old baby. She called on the transitional federal government, rich Somalis and charitable organizations operating inside war-weary Mogadishu to act quickly to lessen their suffering and cover their urgent needs. The rains washed out some makeshift settlements, forcing hundreds of people to seek shelter with other internally displaced people, said Fahmo Adey, a famine victim in Mogadishu’s Waberi district. “Some of the IDPs (internally displaced people) have tents and the downpour compelled us to seek shelter to those tents,” Adey said Wednesday afternoon. She said the rains coupled with heavy winds pushed malnourished children in the settlements close to death because of the extreme cold. Despite the misery experienced in the camps from the rain, should it continue the famine-displaced people will be able to return to their home regions to resume their lifestyle, which based on farming or herding, according to Adey. Somalia is experiencing its worst drought in 60 years. The United Nations has announced a state of famine in six southern regions of the country.
