The US military's ban on women serving in submarines officially came to an end on Thursday, with commanders saying female officers would bolster the underwater fleet. WASHINGTON (AFP) - – The US military's ban on women serving in submarines officially came to an end on Thursday, with commanders saying female officers would bolster the underwater fleet. "Maintaining the best submarine force in the world requires us to recruit from the largest possible talent pool," said Vice Admiral John Donnelly, commander of naval submarine forces. "There are capable women who have the interest, talent, and desire to succeed in the submarine force," he said in a statement. Defense Secretary Robert Gates notified Congress of the planned change on February 19, and lawmakers had until midnight Wednesday to raise objections but took no action, officials said. Senior naval officers in the past resisted proposals to open up the all-male bastion to women, citing the vessels' extraordinarily close quarters and the cost of having to modify subs to accommodate female crew members. The policy change will start with the assignment of female officers to four submarines, including guided-missile attack subs and ballistic missile subs, the Navy said. The women chosen to serve will first have to take a 15-month submarine officer extensive training course. American women can already serve on the Navy's fleet of warships and fly fighter aircraft, but nuclear-powered subs have remained off limits. There are currently more than 52,000 women in the active duty Navy, making up 15 percent of 330,700-strong force. Top-ranking US military officer Admiral Mike Mullen first called for the change in written testimony to Congress last year, saying he wanted to "continue to broaden opportunities for women" in the armed forces. The US Army's chief of staff also has said it was time to revisit rules barring women from ground combat roles.
