At the outset of his meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak in Shanghai on the sidelines of the World Expo, Hu expressed his condolences to the bereaved families of South Korean sailors killed when the Cheonan exploded and sank near the western sea border with North Korea. "To those who died and to their families, please let them know we grieve with them," Hu told Lee. China has not sought a direct mediating role between the Koreas but it has influence as the North's leading economic and diplomatic supporter. It also has extensive trade and diplomatic ties with the South. Hu met earlier Friday with the North's No. 2 official, Kim Yong Nam, at a state guesthouse, although journalists were ushered away after the men exchanged greetings. The participation by North Korea in the Shanghai Expo _ the isolated regime's first world's fair appearance _ sparked speculation that top leader Kim Jong Il might attend, but there was no sign of such a visit. It was unclear whether the leaders from the rival Koreas would have any contact. The nations remain in a state of war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce instead of a peace treaty, and suspicions over the warship's sinking may have spoiled chances for a high-level meeting on neutral territory in Shanghai. The Cheonan was on a routine patrol in late March when an explosion ripped apart the ship. Fifty-eight sailors were rescued; 46 others perished. South Korean investigators have not proven that North Korea was to blame, but the Yellow Sea where it sank has been the site of three bloody skirmishes between the countries, South Korea has said. Lee told Hu that Seoul will inform China of the outcome of the investigation into the sunken vessel as soon as available, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency. The two agreed to push for a free-trade agreement by quickly completing an ongoing joint study on a deal, said Lee Dong-kwan, a senior presidential secretary, according to Yonhap. The two also agreed to deepen their countries' relations and agreed to closely cooperate to make sure trade volume reaches $200 billion in 2012, it said. In Seoul, South Korea's Defense Minister Kim Tae-young told lawmakers Friday that Seoul collected some pieces of aluminum, a key component in torpedoes, during the investigation that appear to differ from the sunken vessel. Kim said earlier the most likely cause was a torpedo exploding near the ship. Even if evidence of an attack is produced, South Korea is considered unlikely to resort to armed retaliation that could risk starting a full-blown war. Analysts say Lee's only recourse may be to squeeze and punish North Korea with sanctions, pressing the U.S. and the U.N. Security Council to follow suit. China, one of five veto-wielding permanent Security Council members, is generally opposed to sanctions, although it has agreed to limited punishment of North Korea over Pyongyang's delay in taking concrete steps to dismantle its nuclear programs. Daniel Pinkston, Seoul-based analyst for the International Crisis Group think tank, said China is unlikely to take part and mediate between the Koreas because such involvement could jeopardize its own national interests. "They (the Chinese) don't want a unified Korea on its border, a Korea allied with the U.S," Pinkston said.
