Stephen McPherson, who helped boost ABC's ratings by shepherding shows such as "Desperate Housewives," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Lost," submitted his resignation as president of ABC Entertainment Group, and the company accepted, according to a Disney statement. McPherson resigned on the eve of the annual presentation by U.S. television networks of their new 2010-11 lineups to journalists. He was due to present ABC's slate of 10 new programs on Sunday in Los Angeles. Disney and ABC officials could not immediately be reached for comment. McPherson's biography was hastily removed from Disney's corporate Web site. Hollywood trade papers said his departure had been rumored for months, citing both a rocky relationship with his boss, Disney/ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney, and a failure to develop promising new programing to replace the network's aging shows. In a statement posted by website Deadline.com, McPherson said he planned to unveil new ventures in the spirits and media sectors. The site also said he would be replaced by Paul Lee, the president of Disney's ABC Family cable channel. But ABC spokesman Kevin Brockman said no replacement had been hired yet. Last season, ABC tied for third place with General Electric Co's NBC behind News Corp's Fox and CBS Corp's CBS among the closely watched adults 18-49 demographic. Its one big new hit was the Emmy-nominated comedy "Modern Family." ABC also finished in third place in terms of total viewers at the end of the TV season which ended in May. The network drew an average audience of 8.7 million, down three percent from last year. ABC plans to introduce 10 new shows for the season starting in September, in the second major overhaul of its line-up in two years. Last season ABC rolled out 11 new shows, but many of them failed to connect with audiences. Drama series "Eastwick", the Kelsey Grammer comedy "Hank" and the big budget supernatural thriller "Flash Forward" were all canceled. Adding to the network's headaches, cult favorite "Lost" -- also a huge international hit -- ended its run in May. McPherson had told Reuters in September last year that he felt the 2009-10 programing was "the strongest development season" since ABC launched "Desperate Housewives", "Lost" and medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" in 2004.
